I guess I can’t go any further without saying something about the racist abuse directed at Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka. As soon as the penalties went as they did, people of colour knew the racism was coming because that’s what happens. Racism isn’t just a problem in the moment, because our government and our society force our minorities to live on the edge, always one step away from violence.

Our leaders aren’t going to take responsibility for sorting this – they won’t even acknowledge the breadth and depth of the problem, nor their role in it. So it’s incumbent upon all of us, as individuals, to take personal responsibility for doing whatever we can.

We need to educate ourselves and our families, amplify minority voices, make sure we understand discrimination so we can call it out when we see it – however uncomfy it makes people – and recruit widely if we’ve got jobs to give out.

There’s a line in Pirkei Avot, the Ethics of the Fathers, attributed to Rabbi Tarphon and that’s worth bearing in mind here: “You are not expected to complete the task, but nor are you free to exempt yourself from it.”

Unironically I'll say thanks for calling me out on my post. I've never seen a more shit penalty delivery than that by Marcus Rashford last night and in the heat of the moment (as evidenced by my post time) I may have been a bit rash with my language. Marcus Rashford is a good chap who's used his status to good effect before and during the pandemic and was rightly rewarded for it. I really feel for the other two chaps who missed their shots too given their inexperience.

With regards to the racist abuse directed at the England team; it should be denounced and condemned where it's observed. I could dip in to how the 'English' identity is demonised apart from during a few tournaments that happen every two years and there are plenty of BIPOC people in the public eye talking about how they identify as being British/European/Londoner but never English but never mind.
You were doing so well, and then you blew it with that last sentence.
How so? I'll add that most of the 'racist' abuse directed against the chaps that didn't make their shots had an incandescent glow to it.

Firstly, you resort to the tired old "but the real English are at least as hard done by" schtick.

Also, you use the term BIPOC seemingly without realising that it doesn't really apply to England given that the I stands for Indigenous. I mean, I'm pretty sure a lot of indigenous English people do indeed identify as English. And if people of any background don't want to be identified as English, maybe the problem isn't with them but with the racist morons who give Englishness a bad name.

I dont get why this has been brought up like such a big deal? Or maybe its just a media drive click-bait fueling the high tensions of this match?
Because anyone who has seen any football in the last 10(?) years from any of the big leagues in Europe cant be surprised?
There are pictures and videos of players faces looking like fucking rainbows due to the amount of lazors being pointed at them.

This is not me defending it, quite the opposite - I have found it fascinating that this has been allowed to go on for so long without serious consequences because fuck that shit.
Clearly a lot of Amarrians go to football matches.

Finding and getting to the ones with the lasers among the tens of thousands rioters at the stadium might be a bit hard.
tens of thousands of rioters with 60k inside? you might have been watching a different game. and no, i'd imagine he (could be a she (it won't be)) will be found i'm sure.

Cripes... I can't keep up with the terminology these days. I'm not for one moment suggesting that the 'real' (your words) English are as hard done by as those from non-native backgrounds. Certain displays of affection for one's nation state outside of major tournaments have been demonised in recent years.

Define 'Englishness' vs 'Britishness'... and compare to 'Scotishness' and 'Welshness'

With the reduced seating levels and assigned spots and the number of cameras in modern stadiums I'm surprised he's not been lifted already.

Englishness is having a terrible national anthem compared to flower of scotland and land of my fathers.
Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves for slaughter.

You're dodging a bullet there... 'British' nationalism has only been allowed, begrudingly, following the rise of certain types not integrating. Scotish and Welsh nationalism is to be positively encouraged. Aside from a bi-annual sportsball tournament when is 'England' a thing?

The annual posh handegg tournament. Every time you drink tea the "proper" way. On St. George's Day. When you see Morris dancers. Whenever you watch a TV show not set in Wales or Scotland. Whenever you walk past an Anglican church. The list could go on. English is the default unless otherwise stated; unlike Welsh, Scottish, Irish etc etc which historically have had to assert their distinctiveness to avoid erasure - & it helped that they had political & cultural elites that benefited from cultivating alternative national identities that positioned them as an alternative to rule by Westminster in the 19th & 20th centuries. Perhaps ask instead why English regional identities (Cornish & the like) are comparatively mocked & ignored by the English cultural & political elites. Or why so much of Scottish cultural iconography is taken from the Highlands when for much of the 17th-18th centuries many Lowland Scottish aristocrats supported English efforts to eradicate the clans. Those are more interesting questions.

Ah, I get it now - British nationalism is all the fault of those pesky foreigners. If only they'd learn to keep in their place. Because of course there was no British nationalism when the Empire was colonising and/or enslaving "inferior" peoples...

The victim complex itself is almost culutrally significant enough to stand on its own.

The Chad White Englander exercising control over the masses (because we all know what happens when they're unleashed... winning wars and football championships and suchlike)?

At the end of the day if the lad's who'd been bought on for the penalties had been white and missed they'd have gotten just as much, if not more grief. The left got a goldmine either way... England won because of non native players... or... England lost but look at the racist abuse these players are getting... England is such a racist country.

Change my mind that Southgate's decision to bring those chaps on at the end of extra time wasn't based purely on diversity/metrics? Why select young, fresh players with little major tournament experience to take those shots?
