the bird strike one we fixed up was intense

it got hit coming in to land, one smashed into the irls desig and basically stitched glass or whatever into the intakes, then the bird carried on into the port intake and fucked it all up. lucky he was low, close and slow otherwise he'd have had to eject. came in yawing all over the place, engine sounded like someone being tortured and it was pluming black smoke out of its vtol vents

pretty awesome sight, pilot was cool as shit after it too.

Well as Teds said, the ground crews got really good at maintaining them but their hover capability was all but nonexistent and their operational range has always been their weak point, they can't really operate in a useful capacity without carriers.

On balance the decision to retire the harriers over the tornado was probably the better choice. Don't get me wrong I love the Harrier, and I'm bitter that we didn't get the P.1154. But at the end of the day we needed a plane with operational combat capability and the Tornado was it.

Iirc their hover capability was only a couple of minutes even when they were new? as they ran out of the water/glycol used to spray into the engines to cool it? And as far as operational combat capability they probably are better than the Tornado for current operations (Afghanistan) where they need a CAS capability?

That was my view on it Warpath mate, but I could well be mistaken as an armchair general

I think they sorted the cooling problem out though, although it may have been a drunken argument some time something something, play more WoT....

it's the opposite. the spams bought our harriers for a knock-down price for spares for the marines harriers because otherwise they'd be falling out of the sky a decade before the f-35b would be ready for them.

And for less mainstream material, Switzerland tried to build its own jets in the 40s/50s. First were the N-20 and N-20.2, but development was halted (the responsible federal councillor was said to have ties to the competing manufacturer in eastern Switzerland where he came from, this obviously had nothing to do with it, oh no).

    N-20 prototype in museum:

    N-20.2 prototype in different museum:

    Back in the day:

The councillor's favourite manufacturer then got the job to create a new jet for the Swiss Air Force, and they developed the P-16. The air force already ordered that when one of them crashed and the whole order was rescinded. It was apparently a pretty good plane compared to other fighter bombers of that time:

They ordered Hawker Hunters instead. No more Swiss jet planes since then

My father's friend flew one of those during Vietnam, he loved the thing, I believe he was being used for forward air control or CAS, not sure though.

Its that cool looking engine in wing design again!
Anybody know what were advantages/disadvantages of that?
I'm guessing it was ditched because jet plane wings need to be very thin?

    Edit:
While goggling around for early jets I ran into this. It is not a plane but under certain conditions I guess it could fly a bit

In early 1970s in Russia there were tests of trains that had jet plane engines.

Its maximum speed was around 249 km/h (around 155 mph). And it had engines from Yak-40 passenger jet plane.
