The forest camouflage on them is neat, but they may as well just paint whole villages on the sides

    F-16's are awesome.

I remember being at an airshow when i was 5 years old and having 2 of them taking of while standing right besides the runway.

Quite literally the most awe inspiring experience i have ever had. The rumble, the ground shakeing, the tearing sound and heat from the engines as they passed by.

    Truly amazing.

Growing up one hour away from Berlin, I saw a number of these planes at the ILA. The sukhois are the best show planes ever. Difference between them and any other show team? They are not specifically modified for air displsys.

    No.

On 18 February 2011, Marine Commandant General James Amos indicated Marine MV-22s deployed to Afghanistan surpassed 100,000 flight hours and were noted as having become "the safest airplane, or close to the safest airplane” in the Marine Corps inventory.[107] The average V-22 mishap rate based on flight hours over the past 10 years, has been approximately half the accident rate for the USMC aircraft fleet. The V-22's accident rate is the lowest of any Marine rotorcraft

There were some problems during design phase though, wiki reads as "During testing from 1991 to 2000 there were four significant crashes resulting in 30 fatalities.[25] Since becoming operational in 2007 the V-22 has had two losses due to accident, and several minor incidents."

The Osprey is pretty cool, but as I personally love traditional whirly birds, and the Osprey is perhaps the herald of the end of their era, it makes me sad. Fortunately choppers (as in Helo's) will be around for some time still

427 C/UH-47's vs. 98 V/M-22's The -47 series is reaching 50 yrs old while the -22 system is only 5. Yeah, give it a few years and actually start running them hard. Willing to bet you'll see that safety record plummet once they start adding more and phasing out the workhorses. Only a few have been pulling duty as people and gear movers. Many have just been working as aerial scouts. Nice and safe. Biggest complaint though isn't safety record. Nor the piss poor maintenance record. It's the fact that the Osprey's can only fit a single M240 in the tail section. While the MH-60 Blackhawks have proven time and time again that side door gunners with big long reaching and hard hitting .50's are really really helpful, the Osprey ends up with an single weaker gun. It's also right in the middle of the ramp meaning that the gunner either has to obstruct the ramp while laying down fire or stow the gun to the side during de-assing. Guarantee you'll be seeing a new revised request for a traditional style helo in short order. Either that or the MH-60's will have to pull double duty to fill in the gaps.

I mean I realize why they want the V-22 and it has a solid niche role. But replacing some of the workhorses with the V-22 is kind of wishful thinking. The Army has its Bradley. The Marines will have it's Osprey.

More prop wash porn. Those poor guys in the back are almost blown off of their feet.

Just pointing out, the V-22 also has an (optional) GAU-17 minigun on its belly:

Can it operate both that and the cargo hook? That looks like a good way to make up for the lack of door guns.

Imho, the V-22 should have always been designed with a nose mounted gun, similar to attack choppers.

Leaving it without a mount was foolish at best. And the ad-hoc addition of a gun on the tail ramp just makes me wonder wtf they were thinking.

Welcome to design projects that the military sticks their fingers into, I get to see that kind of stuff on a small scale on an almost daily basis.
