The Starfighter was not an all-weather attack craft. The Luftwaffe wanted it to be a all-weather fighter bomber, which it couldn't really do. It couldn't really carry the nukes it had to carry, nor could it handle the weather. Furthermore the Luftwaffe was merely four years old, maintenance was shoddy at best, training hadn't caught up yet. Between 1945 and 1960 there was no air force in Germany, none of the old pilots and ground crews worked with planes (civil aviation was also banned for a while). The acquisition was corrupt as fuck (Starfighter-Affäre) as usual for Lockheed (at the time), the plane wasn't really what Germany wanted at the time.

The Italians used the Starfighter as an interceptor, in that role it worked fine.

Oh wait, they used it like Germany and had a 38% loss rate. Higher than Germany's 31% loss rate.
It doesn't take a genius to understand that F-104 can not reliably handle anything other than flying level in perfect conditions and at normal weight. Kinda like the original Tu-22.

The brackets suggest things have improved

No, they mean the sentence can be read both with or without the information contained within. But yeah, it's ambiguous.

    Re: aircraft noise.

3 of our 4 major fighter airfields suffer significantly from urban encroachment (1 is literally in the middle of Darwin, the only one that doesn't is in outback NT).

JSF is significantly louder than F-18s.

The RAAF has a long standing public education programme for people buying into these areas to go 'we make loud noises, we're entitled to make loud noises, you should recognise that before moving here, this is part of the reason it's soo much cheaper'.

When the inevitable complaints start rolling in apparently the planned response is 'sigh, we literally told you so'.

We have similarly stupid people here.

The plans to expand Schönefeld Airport South of Berlin are old. The current plans were drawn up back in the 90s.

People moved close to the airport and then sued for noise pollution. Courts pointed out that they moved in next door to an airport.

The airport did pay for new noise insulating windows for everyone living in the vicinity some time in the 90s.

    Thought of the day:

If American B-52s deliver freedom and democracy so Russian Tu-95s deliver communism and opression?
