What exactly does the F-35 achieve other than making the defense industry really bloated, because there is no country on earth that will be fighting large scale wars with this shit anytime soon. The only things the planes are used for is bombing people with small arms on the ground, so the F-35 and F-22 are impressive wastes of resources.
I will have to play the devil's advocate here.
F-22 was rolling out of the 80s super-fighter program, in the 90s they figured it might as well replace F-15s but by late 00s F-35 has reached "low rate initial production" and it could throw JDAMs just as easily at hopefully much lower cost. That's the sane part.
To understand where everything went wrong you have to watch pentagon wars because it's basically the same shit but from the developer's side

The primary aim of modern warfare (in accordance with the principles of doublethink, this aim is simultaneously recognised and not recognised by the directing brains of the Inner Party) is to use up the products of the machine without raising the general standard of living. Ever since the end of the nineteenth century, the problem of what to do with the surplus of consumption goods has been latent in industrial society. At present, when few human beings even have enough to eat, this problem is obviously not urgent, and it might not have become so, even if no artificial processes of destruction had been at work.
Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves for slaughter.
While objectively true, a military that prepares just for that is destined to fail.
This thinking lead to the current state of the Bundeswehr. The military doesn't have a lobby in Germany to begin with and the end of the Cold War along with the NATO memberships of Poland and the Czech lead to the idea in German politics that the Bundeswehr isn't needed. There are quite a few people that are in favor of dissolving our military right now with no replacement.
After all, we are surrounded by allies/friends. /s

The war this winter in Artsakh/Karabakh was a rude awakening. Drones were the deciding factor in the fight. And Turkey provided heavy support to Azerbaijan. These small scale wars can happen in a lot of places and we will have participation of larger powers on one or the other side. Then you won't be just bombing goat herders. Just because the Soviet Union isn't around anymore doesn't mean you don't have proxy wars.
BTW. Japan is increasing its military readiness after two days of Chinese Coast Guard incursions.

A French Rafale was flying a little to low. It cut 3 power line in southern France. A village of 300 had no power for 3 hours.
The plane was on a low altitude penetration flight training for nuclear strike.
