The Bundeswehr is a shit show, it's not respected, especially not in the East by anyone who served the East German military (my gun course instructor joined the Legion instead of serving the Bundeswehr). The military has no support by the people. And we're stuck, as you point out, by tons of NATO functions that require a decent amount of manpower.
i didn't say it did not affect Germany, but that you're kind-of misrepresenting the causes of the discontentment with it.

i always wondered why the NVA was treated so comparatively badly, by most of the accounts i have read they where rated on-par or above Russian line formations in terms of training and esprit-de-corps though not equipment. not even equating service in the NVA to that of the Bundeswehr seemed needlessly alienating especially compared to how WW2 era personnel, both army and waffen-SS was treated, i mean sure you had to build down armed forces strength in the post-berlin wall period, but the percentages are staggering to look at, less than 5% of the personnel transferred ? really? even considering the political aspects and role of the NVA that held, especially in relation to the grenztruppen that is downright excessive tbh.

but hey, the Foreign legion profited immensely off it, they ended up with several companies of pure German speakers, much like they did in the late 40's and early 50's. (and last i heard, this is actually still the case)
    Viking, n.:
    1. Daring Scandinavian seafarers, explorers, adventurers, entrepreneurs world-famous for their aggressive, nautical import business, highly leveraged takeovers and blue eyes.
    2. Bloodthirsty sea pirates who ravaged northern Europe beginning in the 9th century.

Hagar's note: The first definition is much preferred; the second is used only by malcontents, the envious, and disgruntled owners of waterfront property.

The Bundeswehr of 1989 counted 495,000 soldiers and 170,000 civilian employees.
I Korps: 1 air mobile brigade, 2 panzer divisions, 1 mech inf division
II Korps: 1 air mobile brigade, 1 mech inf division, 1 mountaineer division, 1 para division, 1 panzer division
III Korps: 1 air mobile brigade, 1 mech inf division, 1 panzer division

That's 3 air mobile brigades, 4 panzer divisions, 3 mech inf divisions, 1 mountaineer division, 1 para division (I probably missed a mech inf div or two)

The NVA had 105,000 soldiers during peacetime, wartime nominal numbers were in the 300k range.
Order of battle in the 1980s: 4 mech inf divisions, 2 tank divisions. Add in the Stasi Guard-'Regiment' with a strength of 11,500 soldiers in mostly motorized infantry role adds another division.

So keeping all units active after reunification would have meant keeping 6 tank, 7 mech inf, 1 mountaineer, 1 para and three air mobile brigades around. Not to mention the planes and ships of the air forces and navies.

Also you are forgetting that the East was using Soviet equipment (often not export models but top of the line versions) so if you wanted to keep the manpower, you would have had to give them totally new equipment.
    nevar forget

And thus starting the tradition of using trainer aircraft as the bad guys in films.
