As Joe already mentioned: with which he created a precedence the church now has deal with/gives future popes a way of "bailing out", if they feel unfit for office.

He might have been a bright guy, but he still stuck to the old "protect the church" mechanism when faced with abuse by priests and covered those up. Not bright enough to seee this through, it seems.

    As a Lutheran, you'll excuse me if I don't shed a tear.

In other news, Barbara Walter's died at 93.
I’m an atheist from a region in Germany that was Lutheran from day one. That region lost enough people in the Thirty Years War to be felt today (estimates are at 75% to 90%), I studied at a Uni founded as a result of the Reformation. Even if you are not Catholic it’s worth appreciating someone’s life’s achievements and contributions to their field of work. It’s even possible to do that and criticize them at the same time.
What do you mean by 75% to 90%? As in, the current population is 75% to 90% of the population level from before the Thirty Years War?

75 to 90% of the population back then. But the population growth means that the same population levels were only reached in the 19th century. The prime example is Magdeburg.

In 1550 the city had 34.000 inhabitants. 1620 it was down to 25k, 1639 it was 450 people. 1819 was the first year that the city got back to its pre-Thirty Years War numbers. The city saw a similar decline in WWII, dropping from 330k to 90k.

This map shows the decline in population:
