Was issued a Compaq Tablet for work. Even from back then it would still be more viable as a work tablet than the iPad. The thing went with me into some of the dirtiest nastiest shitholes in the city. Only complaint was that the glass was still glass and I had to send a unit in from a crack that spidered across the entire front from hard use. Crap tons of encryption on it so I wasn't going to be watching movies from it but I could access wifi, do notes, forms, access databases, and do top notch (for tech back then) voice recordings for taking statements. Even had handwriting recognition and would translate notes to straight text. Came with a cumbersome docking station/keyboard that stayed in the car or at work.
Because they put XP on it and expected it to just work.. The form factor is not whats been holding tablets back.
Much heavier than current tablets. But there was interest in that kind of stuff back then. Considering how people flocked to Apple stores to throw $500+ at something that didn't really have a niche and no one really understood what to do with it, I sometimes have to wonder about the whole tablet phenomenon. We had one guy bring one to an out of town work group early last year. He mostly flailed about the thing being useless with it but making excuses for it. Still have yet to see someone use it in an Enterprise setting that didn't have to try and justify the price for its utility (or lack thereof).

I am no Apple fanboy - I hate the company, despise Macs, and think Steve Jobs was a stealing cunt. Do I wish it was better? Hell yes. Compared to everything else though, it's awesome. I am hoping like hell Surface is as good as it appears to be, cause that could be the thing for me, but we have a ton of users on iPads, and they work great in an enterprise environment.
I do have a problem though with the people who have the large cases with the built in keyboards - "you've taken a slim, light tablet and made it into something as big as a laptop - what the fuck was the point in that?"
