Coworker has had one for two years and he's pretty pleased with the price and the general practicality of it. He never does any longer commutes and says that a couple of hours in it on the freeway would be, I believe he said, tiring.
Had one as a rental during a vacation in Iceland in the winter, and it was very well suited for that. Practical, decent drive, and everything is rubber and plastic so no worries while getting in with clumps of ice/snow/mud on your boots. But most of all: you can't go faster than 90 km/h in Iceland. Duster isn't very good for higher speeds. It doesn't have the gearing for it and it gets a bit unstable iirc. Other than that decent little honest car.

how well the used ones hold their price should be indicator enough.

Houston we have a (suspension) problem

First assumed it was tires hitting the wheel well but must be something else. Only happens with a passenger aka additional weight. Most likely from the front since I did stand in the trunk jumping up and down last night. Nothing.
I'm guessing sway bars possible hitting something, or maybe the shock mounts rubbing somewhere i dunno.
    Welp

Hard to tell from the horrible quality audio but I wager it is wheel rub.

Would go with Straight on this one. Take a quick look in the wheel wells and see if you have any scuff marks. Given you have lowered the car a little recently it would be a good bet. Also check for scuffs on the roll bar drop links in case something is contacting other suspension components thanks to lowering. If you cant see scuffs try moulding some playdough on areas you think may contact other points, if an impression is left on dough, you have found your contact point.

So.... turns out it actually wasn't the tires.

2 issues seem to have popped up at the same time - both fixed, hopefully:

.) The bottom mount of the front right mudguard was broken. With enough wind or the suspension being compressed the bottom flap would fold back and scrape over the road. Welp~
Took the mud guard off, bit off sandpapering to clean the roughed up edges. Some Sugru on both sides fixed the bottom mount. Heat gun was used to reshape it and bring the bottom flap up into a horizontal position again.

.) The aftermarket 2.5" exhaust system must've been scraping or hitting the frame whenever the suspension was bottoming out with a passenger and spirited driving through a dip or hanging corner. Or possibly that's just how the FM rear shock mounts sound when the suspension bottoms out with the FM foam bumpstops.

Either way I did put the Koni shocks from the default middle to the highest spring perch yesterday. Managed to do it without removing the shock assembly.
Put the car on the lift and used two pieces of 2x4 to push up the bottom shock mount while lowering the car again. Plus a single spring compressor to keep it all in place while fiddling with the circlip.

So the tires weren't the issue alltough camber is definetely way off and positive. I'll get it aligned asap.

Time for an update, a tale of rx7 ownership and redemption.

In the middle of august, my new purchase started having trouble getting up in the morning, starting was harder, sometimes she would fart some eye watering clouds on startup but not always. To give her a fighting chance I changed the starter to a 2kw starter straight from a younger model (The starter from an rx8 fit part on part, the base rx7 model was 1.2kw). Starting was easier but then she screamed at me that coolant was low. I expected the worst, but after a quick bubble test I semi-ruled out the inevitable.

To my despair, after much finageling I came to the conclusion that her water (seal) broke! For all intents and purposes I might end up the proud father of a miata, or atleast to the equivalent bill in canadian funnybucks.

    So up she went:

here you can see her partially naked

looking straight down at her brain (fuck the rats nets, that thing is an exercise in frustration)

Now here's me pointing at various thingamabobs

here's one with some added motion blur, for effect

After about 10-12 hours of labor we finally finished the painful extraction.

My friend taking an rare opportunity

So I brought the deceased to the only rotary shop east of calgary for a breakdown and rebuild and I asked them to take a picture of the fucking seal that broke.

Here it is, the broken seal is the orange thing, normally it goes in an infinite loop, you can clearly see that it was sundered in twain.

a week later I went to pick up the spanking fresh replacement.

The new block as the oil metering pump deleted and the compression sits at averages of 135 and 130 on the front and back rotors which is beyond amazing.

Me and the step father corrected a bunch of shoddy things. She had a cracked turbo outlet pipe and a bunch of different things where done poorly, so we spent alot of extra hours making things right.

And here she is! all buttoned up again!

I had to boost the battery and change the plugs and she started up like a champ.

Thursday night I'm gonna go put her hood back on and instal the V-springs for the back brake caliper and then i'll do a shakedown run in it to seal the deal.

Now if you ever shop for an rx7, you need to do a compression test AND pressurise the coolant system to see if it holds pressure. mine was just beginning and the coolant seals frequently start acting like one way valves so I might very well not have seen it even if I had tested but it can't hurt.

Now for random car related things:

Next door to the shop where I picked up my new starter the owner had this pristine twin turbo black on black canadian supra. It's probably worth 50-75k canadian pesos atm.

And the shop I deal with for dorito related need are quad rotoring a yellow lamborghini gallardo and while I didn't have the gal to ask for pictures of the 4 rotor block I did ask for a picture of the original lambo engine they have at the shop.

For the eagle eyed you might see the rod saying hello straight down from the second exhaust port. That, as the internet says, is what killed the crab.

The lambo was used by the ICAR circuit right by Mirabel here in Quebec. It was a supercar experience car so it probably had a pretty rough life.

So 6.000km down on the M550D. Car continues to impress day in day out, but it really requires a different POV. The car really appears slow when driving it, the "mountain" of torque makes things appear effortless and, in a way, boring. Which is fantastic when you want a high performance long distance vehicle that does not attempt to increase the perception of speed by yelling REVS. And totally shit when you expect a car to be all in your face advertising its performance agressively.

I usually drive flat out where allowed, but maintain safety distance and when speed limited, limit the car to limit+20 (since thats just a slap on the wrist if caught). In practical use it means that with traffic, you will not be faster than "lunatics with 200-250hp" cars who do not keep a distance and have no regard for speed limits. But its a good feeling to be that fast in a safe and non lunatic way. And you even get a reward when the highway is empty, some mongrel in his 200hp TDI sits on the left lane at 180 giving everyone the light to then SLOWLY creep up to 210, when you give him the light and proceed to 255 into the limiter.

Update time, she's back home and pretty happy.

I had trouble with it stalling when I let off the gas, and I fucked around the neighborhood tonight, verdict is that my battery is dead (luckily I had another one in the trunk aniway) and the idle need to be adjusted way up for a fresh rebuild, right about 1500 rpm to be exact.

So I fiddled with one of the idle adjust screw in the dark while it was raining after stalling it 3-4 times driving around in montreal until she had time to catch herself before spilling the beans and I can't get her to stall now. Quite happy with the night.

I haven't used her much yet since it's been raining for the past few days, and the stalling was kinda putting me off putting some miles onto her. Now i'll slowly increase my radius until i'm certain she's gonna keep on keeping on. I've since read a bit about the idle following a rebuild and since the compression keeps changing, adjusting the idle in the first 1000 km is pretty useless. Aniway, I guess now I know lol.

The timer until the first snow is inexorably ticking though, I just hope i'll have a couple of clear days to use it before we freeze our asses off.

    Rock on!

If they stop putting the engine in the wrong fucking place they would make more outstanding cars. Cretins! Yes, i hate their infatuation of MAKING a rear engine car work and hamstringing their mid engine'd offspring to boost sales of their self masturbatory, myopic, egomobiles.

    Yeah, i am quite bitter.
