yep! she drove all of 20km this summer as of today, we moved and I just got back from a week on the road with my curret boss so I really have not had time to enjoy it this summer yet.

good on you for the rx-8, premixed the renesis are really not that bad. wait till they are at temp to flog em'. With decent maintenance you'll have problems elsewhere before the motor starts giving you trouble.

Here in quebec they are dirt fucking cheap too, decent exemple go for like 5k$ canadian...

IIRC the main issue people ran into with RX-8's were the transmission going kaboom.

the main thing nowadays is bad maintenance since the cars are cheap turning into low compression. A well done engine refresh by a shop that knows what it's doing can be worth about as much as another used rx-8.

My local rotary shop (we have two in Canada, one in Alberta and one on the north shore of Montréal) have been doing more and more Renesis rebuild, they also machine the rotors to put rx7 seals as they are stronger and last longer.

The manual transmission is mostly fine at the stock power level, and increasing power on that engine is very, very hard as it's basically strung like a thighrope for emission reasons. You can't easily add boost without major work and you might get 5hp over stock with regular tuning. You can free up a bit more with free flowing exhaust, but in places where emissions are checked that won't fly as you get alot of raw fuel and oil out of the exhaust without recirculation and good catalyzers.

I don't know about the auto gearbox though, they where terrible in rx7s of basically all vintage so I suppose they where shit in the rx8 too.

Very much looking forward to this. From what i've heard, the GR86 is approximately 2 - 5 seconds faster when performing trackwork than the Golf R on same tyres ... which is an utterly surprising amount given the power and torque delta and holds up well against the Audi RS 3, which is by no means a slouch.

If they add a supercharger option to the GR86 like the good old days, it will be a giant killer.

When in doubt always take your foot of the gas pedal and don't even think about flooring it and powering through with a controlled slide. Take it to your nearest track or some other big open space without anyone else in sight and spend some hours there doing stupid shit and seeing how well you can manage it. Never, ever turn stability, traction etc control off while driving in traffic.

If it is indeed your first RWD then THIS. RWD handles very differently than FWD, especially in the wet.

Also see if you can get some additional driver tuition for RWD cars. It makes a massive difference to how to understand balance and how you view your car and the fact that it is a very dangerous tool. Learning how to not get into situations where you have already lost control of the car is a great start, being able to then deal with the car once control is lost is a great second.

Once you have done that.... TRACKDAYS! Trackdays are awsome when you have a fairly experienced bunch of people one the track at the same time, but can turn pretty scary when you have a couple of fucking idiots in powerful cars with too much testosterone and not enough skill (watch out for 'all the gear, no idea' retards, usually in powerful german wagons and 'fast'n'furious' types. both whom seem to have zero fucking clue of how to approach and take corners).

Yes, this would be my first RWD car, but fear not, I'm a very conservative driver. I never pushed my Altima or C300 in anything other than acceleration. No cornering, no drifting, no powersliding, no testing the handling on a wet road. That said...

I have a BRZ. It's great. Two cars in one really. Keep it under 3.5k rpm and its a decent commuter, if a little stiff suspension wise. Get it above 4k rpm, and its a very different car.

Toyota has updated their specs for the GR86. Instead of "91 octane recommended", it now says "93 octane or better". And it still gets worse mileage than the GR Supra.

Yeah that's true. Seconding Mazdas in particular being good for their numbers, I've got an mx5 with a 2L engine that has a lifetime average mpg slightly above the advertised number and I daily drive that for commuting with the additional mandatory country runs where it gets a bit spirited. Though I suppose it weighs barely over a ton so it should behave on fuel.

We can all agree that it's not too surprising that the BMW engine and auto-box in the supra are pretty neat and very German.

I just wish Honda would stick their latest 2l vtec goodies in a new s2000 for one last hurrah. Much like Nissan being cool enough to roll out the Z for the end of petrol non-hybrid cars.
