Have you ever driven a Porsche to make this judgement? I mean, an actual Porsche, not the videogame one.

Yes, ones you dream of sitting in. And aside from a gt3 I would never consider buying one

No, but since it is a rear-engine (just like Porsche), it drives the same (at least according to teds )

So, as hinted at in the daythread, my car's battery was indeed bad. Dad took it upon himself to take out the battery, get it tested, get a new one and install it. He did so in -10F weather without me asking him to. How nice of him. I compensated him for the cost, plus some extra for his time.

Unfortunately, this act somehow seems to have killed the heating/cooling computer, so I am unable to turn on the AC, heater or defroster. The entire panel for that system was lights out, not a fuse issue. A trip to the MB dealership confirmed this with a diagnostic. I am now looking at a $1000 bill for replacing the unit, a unit that was working fine previously. He was of the opinion that he had to get my car in working order by Monday, so I could take it to school Tuesday.

    - He forgot that we have another perfectly operating vehicle in the garage that we keep as a spare for these situations.
    - I had indicated I was waiting for the weather to get better before doing anything with the car, and would use the backup in the meantime.
    - He decided to replace the battery himself instead of letting a dealership do it, and did only enough research to figure out how to replace it (and no research on a proper method, which may have caused the new problem).
    - He didn't think to connect the trickle charger to see if I could limp through this week.
    - He scheduled a dealership appointment during the limited time that I have to do my homework, without asking me about my schedule or what I wanted.

    ......

I had a discussion with my father about him making decisions about my property for me. I wasn't mad at him, but I'm certainly not happy. Part of the reason I'm not mad is because I didn't try to stop him at any point (he's my dad, I figured he knew better than me). He'll pay for the diagnostic and I'll pay for the replacement part. Afterwards, I might have another serious discussion with him.

except if he connected it the wrong way around i don't see how a battery change could fry your climate control.

If I was you i'd start with a quick google of the model and general problem, it might be something way stupid that you won't have to spend a grand on. If it's an old Mercedes it might simply need a fuse out - fuse in to reset the computer or something.

Fussing about with a car battery once caused me to fry my audio amp. In hindsight that probably wouldn't have happened had I put on the lights beforehand. So yes, frying electronics in cars is easy if you much about with the battery without the proper precautions.

Throwing these out there because I have experienced weird battery issues because BMWs do some odd stuff when you replace them:

Check your fuses. If your car has secondary jumper posts, trying jumping it from them. You can also try disconnecting the battery and bridging the positive and negative connector for a minute to drain the residual charge from the car.

Worth a few minutes of fucking about before dropping a grand on a module that might be fine

yeah that's my guess if the control panel is well and truly fucked. but i'd bet 10$ that it's simply a stupid setting or procedure you need to do when you change the battery.

So, after going to another dealership and getting a near-identical quote, I find that the unit in question did in fact short out. I bit the bullet and paid just over a thousand dollars for a diagnostic, part and labor. I asked for the old unit back, and I was shocked. It's this thing. Not some computer buried in the engine compartment or near the firewall, but some thing I could have removed myself.

To make things worse, I was charged $602 for a part I found online for $432 new, or $70 from an auto salvage yard. And neither my dad or I thought to use the salvage yards we've used in the past.
