super interesting, I didn't know about shape stabilization having that big of a difference and am now very interested.

I can tell what he did by just looking at airflow. <Xplane plane constructor, Kerbal with FAR flex>

Any 1st year Mech Eng student with a solidworks flow sim module could probably figure it out. I have a pretty good idea what he did (most aerodynamics is just trial and error with bulges) and I flunked out from the bachelors program.

I'm just amused by the amount of smugness.

Regarding the shell though these HEATs are from the 60s but the most modern one doesn't differ that much.

yeah it's a shitty crop buut the only other image i found was a post stamp.

Pretty typical of an undergrad engineering student. 80% are insufferable.

    can confirm, am one.

wanker doesn't realise that CFD was not actually available at the time, it's a shell designed in the late 60's/early 70's and CFD simulation came much much later, especially in the soviet union.

he also completely ignores the production aspect, fancy aerodynamics means it's a more complex part, meaning it's more difficult to build if a change gives a 20% velocity increase, for a HEAT shell, but doubles production time it's not worth it, especially as the velocity doesn't affect shell performance down range beyond making it harder to hit the target.

everything is a balance of different factors, if something is performing suboptimally in one area, it's a reasonably sure bet that it does so for a good reason.

Didnt realise there were so many shaped charges in a single HEAT shell.

I feel like that there is a solid "your mum" joke to be made here with a little bit of effort, but I am not 100% sure of myself rn.

yeah there were no means of aerodynamic testing before

because wind-tunnel testing design variations a the speeds this stuff moves at is a trivial exercise to conduct right ?
that's why CAD stuff, like CFD is so awesome, you cut out 9/10ths of the physical testing and use it to validate designs instead.

    orly

Digital simulation is terribly efficient, doesn't mean people in the 60s just drew stuff up and put in production without extensive testing. Think about spitzer bullets with a boat tail in early 20th - that wasn't just trial and error.

no and i didn't say that anywhere either, but aerodynamic optimization is, math-wise, fuck-off-hard especially as geometric complexity goes up.

predicting the aerodynamics of a bullet with a given set of dimensions is within the realm of something you can do a on a blackboard and adjusting the parameters can thus be reasonably well predicted, at no point are your flows interacting with another flow or a surface, meaning you dont need to get out iterative equations or deal with any of the shit that makes aerodynamics horrifyingly complex, on top of that bullets are rotationally rather than aerodynamically stabilized, meaning you've "just" have to optimize the airflow across the surface.

but this ain't a bullet, it's a cylinder with a elongated probe and fins on the back, you've got multiple boundary separation points and interacting flows close enough to affect the overall stability and what not. suffice to say a lot of engineering hours (probably at a literal blackboard) went into that thing and i suspect a fair bit of supersonic wind tunnel hours as well.

There is a reason the Russian Federation is the source for most of the best vacuum tubes still being manufactured that you can buy to stick in your guitar amp. The Chinese make em too, but the quality is variable, to stick the least. The holy grail seems to be finding new old-stock mullards to stick in your Marshall, but the British haven’t made them in years and years.
