A training aid??? What kind of training? How not to build a tank destroyer?
    Target practice?

It's about twice the height of an actual T-72 so it's easier to practice

NTC at Fort Irwin, Cali & the JRTC at Fort Polk, Louisiana have most of the US VISMOD stuff. They used to use a lot of Sheridans as make-believe T72s - pic from wiki

See also the Sheridan here and a Humvee made up as a BRDM (source with other examples)

    (better BRDM pic from Twitter)

M113 as BMP-2 (source gallery - as an aside, I think this conversion works well)

The reason why (ersatz versus bargain basement 'originals') is probably because they literally have so much old stuff laying around the price to operate can't be beat. The exception being I think they replaced the Hueys with the relatively new Eurocopter UH-72 Lakota some time in the last decade...

    Viking, n.:
    1. Daring Scandinavian seafarers, explorers, adventurers, entrepreneurs world-famous for their aggressive, nautical import business, highly leveraged takeovers and blue eyes.
    2. Bloodthirsty sea pirates who ravaged northern Europe beginning in the 9th century.

Hagar's note: The first definition is much preferred; the second is used only by malcontents, the envious, and disgruntled owners of waterfront property.
