The issue really wasn't rolling the APC into the city, it was rolling it in unsupported. In an urban combat zone you need to cover your flanks with infantry to flush out any insurgents and or IED's. They were acting like they had shit locked down, but obviously didn't and got a face full of shrapnel for their trouble.
Whatever the circumstances BMPs have nothing to do in hostile cities. They are the glassiest cannons of all.
On top of being excellent on open ground. Basically soviets would flank the shit out of cities and lock them down to be ravaged by artillery or give zero fucks at all rolling on to valuable military objects.
Strykers and Bradleys, on other hand, have no choice in the matter because they get stuck in light sand~~~

Yeah but successfully invading Afghanistan is really really hard as you found out in the 80's and we found out in the 2000's I don't know what it is about that place but when every goat herder and donkey breeder and opium farmer is co-operating with you one minute and sabotages your vehicles as soon as you turn around you can either forcefully occupy it and do an old-school invasion where you annex it and declare yourself king, or you can leave it the fuck alone.
Second option's more or less the best one nowadays. Also fuck Syria, we need to tear that shit a new one but Putin won't let us, what's with that? At least let us put UN peacekeepers in there and find out what's actually going on.
I only want it really so I can see what a joint NATO and Russian military operation would be like.
