WHY DO YOU HATE GREEN ENERGY
firstly because it's not green, never was.

secondly because its all handwaving and smokes and mirrors without considering what the ultimate effects are, there's now 7 billion people on this planet, if we are going to provide enough power for all of them to live what we would consider a "comfortable life style" here in the west (ie, jettison the whole "consumerism" as the incredibly wasteful and unimaginably pointless construct it is) there's not going to be enough to go around without building more nuclear plants.

i would expect them to be placed in relatively safe areas, with strict running times and the kind of oversight reserved for nuclear weaponry.

the biggest danger there is with "going nuclear" is when "we suck bollocks power co." decides to cut costs on their aging reactor facilities by lowering safety or running them beyond their designed and projected lifespan.

But it's free sunshine energy or wind energy.

Nucular is the devil and kills kittens.

It makes no sense to switch from fossil fuels to nuclear until we get other technology up and running. We should use all our fossils up so that we can't use it for other uses that require oil etc.

    Sensing sarcasm.
In defense of trying to preserve our fossil fuel supplies: it is proven that we are having a decline in the petrol that is being found in deposits, and while we might like driving and cheap ways to produce energy (coal plants), the petrol should be prioritized for jetliners and other massive transports - once the fuel runs out, we won't have the same access to rapid travel until we find alternative fuels for jets.

    I can't troll very well.

I can't remember where/who it's from but fossil fuels are needed for a whole whack of industrial processes and products outside of just burning the shit for fuel in cars/planes etc.

Easing the use of oil etc for power generation and hopefully moving away from using it in cars means there's more left for those other uses.

And fuck off if anyone says electric cars nowadays, until the majority of power is from nuclear/hydro, you're still using fossil fuels to power your hipstermobile.

I'd gladly learn to stick to public transit to get long distances and take an electrical car for urban settings.

your problem, young padawan is that your position is falling into the uncanny valley, its not unreasonable enough to be completely retarded, and its not reasonable enough to pass the "he just bought into the "nuclear power eats kitten" idiocy from the green party" test.

sorry for replying late, you have a valid point here but think of it this way: is it harder to keep the waste of a coal plant out of the environment or a nuclear reactor?

As far as that fire goes, it looks pretty tame compared to the wildfires we've been having every few years around the san diego area. We're probably due for another big one either this year or next.

My argument is not regarding coal waste vs nuclear waste. My point in that statement was that nuclear waste has long-term consequences that requires it be disposed of in a much more technical manner.

It isn't the same issue with coal plants.

It's because coal plants are cheap to operate and contribute to hydrocarbon/CO2 levels. If you have interests in reducing the chances for droughts or extreme weather, it makes sense that we should try to reverse our CO2 growth rather than lowering our input on an annual basis and not attempting to find out where the system for regulating the global climate will break.

Thank god it wasn't one of ours. Although apparently Greenpeace or some similar gang of loonies are planning to take a road trip to one my my wells this weekend and shut it down.

The real solution is to close the $80 billion (give or take, depending on the development time chosen) gap towards commercializing Nuclear Fusion tbh.
