[Bay Area, California] Richmond Oil Refinery On Fire

The explosions started about 6:15 p.m. and at least two large fires spewed thick, black smoke into the darkening sky.

The fire started at the refinery's No. 4 Crude Unit, Chevron officials said. Just before 6:30 p.m., an inspection crew discovered that there was a diesel leak in a line in the unit - and that the leak was growing.

Shortly after the crew evacuated the area, the diesel ignited, said Nigel Hearne, manager of the refinery.

There's some absolutely nasty stuff in Crude; the citizens have been ordered to shelter in place with all ventilation shut down due to the toxicity of the smoke. Was hoping for a better subject for my 4,000th post, but oh well.

Those of you in the area, stay safe!

pretty fucked. the area i'm in isn't officially affected, but i'm just outside of "the zone". a parent of mine lives in the hills though, but things seem to be alright according to her.

Just saying, gotta love all these refineries!

Let's make a thread on pushing for less petrol.

If we are going to reduce/remove coal power plants, or nuclear power plants, I wonder how willing people are to have solar panel grids or wind farms?
At least until we develop fusion power plants.

I live in California. I could see this having a significant impact on the price of gasoline down here.

    Reminds me of:

    I WAS THERE.
(also saw the reporters there asking all our SNCOs and Officers near the scene)

Good memory because we had two sandstorms that night (which did shit for helping put out the fire as the lot was right next to the fuel depot).

since when are nuclear plants as bad as coal? more nuke till we come up with something better i say.

In would also prefer nuclear to coal and nat. gas but if nuclear is going to work we have to be responsible about it. Building multiple plants near a fault line is a terrible idea. Strict healthy and safety regulations are also needed.

True, they don't have the same immediate waste, but disposing of used fuel rods/nuclear waste has been the ongoing issue with the power plants.

So far the best solution I've seen was the one at Onkalo in Finland.

Solar technology has become more advanced: with the transparent panels that can be installed on windows, large windows like deck windows could be used for saving energy, and the average 1x2 meter panels that are installed on roofs rate between 75 Watts to as high as 350 Watts.

try looking into what's required to build those panels.

then compare it to the energy requirements of any western nations, even the most efficent ones in scandinavia running on nearing 20% wind power.

then consider the sun does not shine at night, and that the wind does not always blow.

Nuclear is the only reasonable way forward, outside of burning more coal.
