'''Return an str with the current engine version.
If key doesn't doesn't exist, assume 'Source', otherwise invalid — assume next-gen 'Source 2'.'''
    From the source film maker

    So maybe soon.

I must admit, this Valve troll has been impressive, but not entirely surprising. We had a massive 6-year gap between HL and HL2, and since the last episode we've had a 5-year wait. Difference now is that Valve actually a whole bunch of other projects like L4D, Portal etc... they've been doing in the meantime wheras I can't really recall them doing nearly as much between 1998 and 2004.

Anyway, I think it's safe to say Episode 3 has become Half Life 3 and a new engine is probably involved here as Source is pretty ancient now. HL3 will be the debut game for the new tech but I very much doubt we will know much until release is imminent. Gabe has made obscure references to it being in development but I'm not hopeful we will see anything substantial until at least next year.

It does of course fill me with eternal disappointment every time an E3 goes past and Valve say nothing about it but I guess it's the price you have to pay to eventually learn what the fuck it all means.

It'll be nice in the long run to not have seen a hundred previews and heard the rampant speculation associated with it

On one hand waiting is shit but on the other, I love how any other game company in the world would be rushing it out for easy $ and filling the intermediate time with constant teasers, trailers and interviews alluding to how awesome it will be, whereas valve aren't in a hurry to milk it and somehow refuse to even talk about it at press conferences explicitly set up for such things. It's the elephant in the room whenever they go to E3 etc but it's nice to see they treat a guaranteed money maker more like safe future revenue they don't have to rush to rather than "must improve yearly profit with iconic franchise".

The advantages of not having investors is not being pressured into that shit, the magic is making more money than the companies that do have shareholders breathing down their necks, doing so with such finesse that their microtransactions are met with "cool, hats" and their contemperaries with "rabblerabblerabble" is hilarious.

They can't release HL3 until gabe gets up on stage at E3 with a giant "3" on the projector behind him, which then morphs into "Welcome to E3" after the crowd has had sufficient time to work themselves into a frenzy. The troll potential there is just to great of an opportunity to miss. So assuming he does that next E3, I give it a minimum of 1.5 years still until we see an HL3.

I look forward to the amount fun valve is going to have when they do get around to HL3.

GabeN held a conference with the deaf a while back, he was trying to figure if having a character that signed in-game was doable or would be welcomed. Anyone know what came of that?

You could probably find a YT video of it, it wasn't a super secret thing.

The thing is that you know they would have been working on Episode 3 after Ep 2 came out, but I guess they didn't think it was good enough, and threw it out? Probably been through a few revisions and by now Source is getting old so maybe it will be out on Source 2, but eeh. It makes me kind of edgy, I mean I hope it's great, but all this anticipation. If it isn't game of the century 15/10 then there will be major butthurt. And what if it's even bad, like what if it goes on so long they eventually say "fuck it" and just release it like DNF, what then? Would have been better to just release it several years ago. It's kind of funny how they just completely failed at the whole "episodic" nature of the episodes.

Well, they just did it with CS GO.

This game will unlock in approximately 1 week, 6 days and 23 hours
    So there is hope.
And it could count as their first, third game in series, right?

Odd that they waited so long to re-make counter-strike and then didn't wait for source2 tbh. Unless "hybrid" means games that will run on either engine in which case perhaps they mean to upgrade it later.

Probably should have used Unreal 3 as your example there. But I think that's only used because it's easy and cheap.
