Talaiasi Labalaba is a person that every school child should be taught about and someone who should be looked up to.
    Forget about political affiliations.
He stood by his mates and he defended them to the death. An amazing feat of physical courage that outshines any Olympian.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B61_nuclear_bomb

Being stationed on the Theodore Roosevelt (a nuclear powered ship) and an ELT (Engineering Laboratory Tech) in the Reactor Division one of the things I was responsible for was helping to keep meticulous track of every morsel of radiation on the ship be it related to the nuclear power plants or not.

For example, in the Admiral's cabin there was some ceramic tile on the kitchen floor. Like all ceramic tile this material contained contamination above background levels. As a result, we had to survey the tile monthly to account for it, make sure it hadn't spread, etc.

Similarly, we had to survey ammunition lockers on the carrier in the event we had actual nuclear weapons aboard. I had to do this twice. Several stories down an elevator to a cramped, austere "locker" amid several of what I suppose were B61 nuclear bombs.

Let me tell you about an eery, disturbing feeling.

edit: and you should have seen the look on my wife's face when I showed her this post...

I wonder if they keep decoys among the real ones. They are so small, ive maintained this vision that all nukes are "Tall Boy" and "Fat Man" shaped. I knew they had gotten smaller since then, BUT CHRIST.

I don't know the procedures for ensuring custody of nuclear weapons in the navy but, I'm sure they're at least as strict as the rules we had to adhere to regarding radiation on the ship. That would mean there is absolutely no fucking around, no mixing them with conventional weapons, etc.

That's a pretty awesome story, in the original sense of the word. I cannot really imagine what it must be like realizing you're standing next to something with enough energy yield to wipe out a major city. Let alone racks of them.

See also the SADM : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special...ition_Munition

Quintessentially a backpack nuke. 150lbs, 1kt yield. Not quite a city buster, but it wouldn't do an urban area any good, that's for sure.

I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those Thukkers, that way I wouldn't have to have any goddamn stupid useless conversations with anybody.

Heh, thanks, let me tell you about the times I had to open the reactor compartment and survey it after shutdown...and standing on top of 500MW reactor

Let me tell you about the meticulous levels of nuclear accountancy I have to register and pass on to the regulators for every fuel rod that goes through my plant...

Nuclear fuel... it's not cool, it's not sexy, it's fucking boring and hazardous.

This is much more fun and politically correct.

We had shipyard workers to deal with fuel rods. They're not as big as civilian rods but far, far more concentrated. Surveying the reactor compartment after shutdown was the most serious event in terms of exposure. Any individual was tasked with it only about twice a year. Routine (daily) things like sampling the reactor coolant gave you exposure but it was very, very low...except that one time the tubing burst and my face shield was up but, that's for another thread.

Back to rusty ordanance: Got one of these in my closet. Fun as hell to shoot, loud as hell, kicks a fair bit, and love the sound then the ammo clip kicks out the top and straight up into the air.

The United States then launched an "Atoms for Peace" program that supplied equipment and information to schools, hospitals, and research institutions within the U.S. and throughout the world. The first nuclear reactors in Iran and Pakistan were built under the program by American Machine and Foundry.

Was a good concept... until they realised that allowing junior officers control of nuclear weapons was probably a bad idea.

North Korea's atomic program was based on British reactors and reprocessing plants, the designs for which were released via atoms for peace... LOOL.

    M270 MLRS

also known as the Grid Square Removal System, because you point it at a map grid, and it annihilates everything in it.

Most hilarious thing I saw, (didn't film it unfortunately). Out with my team of ANA doing flank protection for the Danes, next thing the CAG net lights up. They're sending in a B1 callsign to drop a 2000lb bomb. I look at the boss, he looks at me, we look at the terp...
    'Chaps, dig deep,'
    Woosh overhead...
    Fuck all. On the radio...
'It's a blind, coming round for another one'
    Lool.
About 3-4 minutes later... Danes desperately withdrawing. I'm like 'I can't deal with this shit, I drove over a mine four days ago and can't hear fuck all.'
    Whoom.... BOOSH.
Smack bang on the original impact site. Two tonnes of high explosive.
Danes all got out. Taliban didn't (lool)...

I've searched for the poo thread topic where I first heard a MLRS fire off but I think that's lost in the old SHC.

More like dignity removal system... Cross posted from the poo thread

When I deployed to Afghan several years later I found myself on one of the larger camps for a bit, air conditioned tents, real toilets and hot and cold water. I took the opportunity to lighten the load so to speak. I sat down on a stainless steel throne clutching a six month old jazz mag with the intention of making an iced log. As I was mid strain I heard the most thunderous explosion. Despite being new in theatre I was no stranger to indirect fire and assumed that the Taliban were in the process of mortaring the shit out of the camp. Knowing that moments counted I flung myself out of the door without even crimping off and threw myself onto the ground. Midair I came to the realisation that it wasn't incoming fire at all but a GMLRS sending a fiery rocket to destroy some heathens. To my horror that was also the exact moment a pair of Danish officers decided, for whatever reason, to enter the toilet tent. Yeah, pretty awkward.
