    Sirius Business

Sirius is the brightest star in the northern sky. Often appearing low on the horizon, it has a distinctive sparkling appearance. Although the brightest star in our skies, this is mainly due to it's proximity to Earth (8.6 light years) and not due to extraordinary luminosity.

Sirius also has a little homie called Sirius B. Sirius B is the burnt out husk of a large sun-like star. Some say that the orbital dynamics of the system were communicated to certain ancient African tribes by aliens, although this is unlikely. There is a hypothesised third member of the Sirius system awaiting discovery.

Use this thread to talk serious talk about Sirius.

The name comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, in close proximity to the sun was responsible for the hot weather.

In Ancient Rome, the Dog Days ran from July 24th through August 24th, or, alternatively, from July 23 through August 23rd. In many European cultures (German, French, Italian) this period is still said to be the time of the Dog Days. Jeff Kinney's Dog Days The Old Farmer's Almanac lists the traditional period of the Dog Days as the 40 days beginning July 3rd and ending August 11th, coinciding with the ancient heliacal (at sunrise) rising of the Dog Star, Sirius. These are the days of the year with the least rainfall in the Northern Hemisphere.

No proof, so I cannot take any claims seriously. If there was a planet there which had harbored intelligent life which had capability for interstellar transportation, their planets are bombarded by heavy radiation from Sirius B as a white dwarf, and Sirius A is double the mass of our sun.

I'm not interested in claims without backing.

I never presented any such claims as fact. The dogon tribe did have a history of revering Sirius, and interestingly they referred to Sirius' binary nature and to the newly discovered component of the system being very compact. However, this was (not long) after the same discovery had been made by European astronomers. It is most likely that they acquired knowledge of our discoverys and worked that into their original myth like a mole-rat working it's shrivelled penis into a mouse.
