As for the lunch, too lazy to designate. I always tell people where to find a spreadsheet where they can fill stuff out - just so that we don't end up with 10 people bringing bread. It's good fun though. Even despite the fact they'd never done it before, people had all brought something nice. We all crammed ourselves at one table and proceeded to eat and have bad taste discussions. So now a few people have tentatively suggested to do it again (great success, evil plan has worked).

Off topic, but my roommate has an obsession with organizing potluck dinners. Except the extent of her organization is telling everybody "come to my potluck dinner at such and such a time, and oh yeah bring something maybe if you want to".

You can predict how that goes.

2. Only Serious Discussion Group members can start a thread
3. Limit the replies you see to those of your group only. So Serious Discussion group members only see their discussion, everyone else sees the general discussion

It's a dumb idea tbh as it's people arguing something that will never be resolved.

This is the internet so obviously discussions are pointless. The idea is learning something new without having to do all the research yourselves.

Its what separates us from the "water cooler" type restrictions we are placed under day to day in the real life.

What restrictions? I coerced my coworkers into having a potluck type lunch (apparently very new to them) and we ended up discussing why men's swimwear seems to decrease in size as the men get older (and usually increase in size). Then we (well, the girls) went on to graphically describe what is wrong with speedos unless you have a sixpack. Not the type well hidden, btw. *evil giggle* The only thing that would have made it better was some cat meme picture.

A similar thing to the pot luck lunches that we do here just just tell everyone to bring a plate. So everyone just brings something, usually no organisation and from the ones I've been to somehow you never seem to end up with heaps of the same thing. It's pretty awesome since everyone makes their best thing so everything is great.
