I disagree, everything in the True Blood universe is with a large wink and a healthy dosage of hyperbole to illuminate just how ridiculous it is.

VtM is grim (although not grimdark), foreboding, frightening and heavily sexualized. The atmosphere of the latter is meant to resemble all the connotations we had to original vampire myths, the former is "Sooookie" in a southern drawl.

The only way you could compare it to True Blood is seeing some characters that would transfer across into VtM.

Russell Edgington would work until he got put down for going full retard. Eric Northman and Pam would work. Those friends of Bill's from the first ep that get killed would work. But you'd have to remove all the human characters with dialogue and only keep the blood sacks. Alcide wouldn't just be an emo biker but an unstoppable killing machine. But yeah, that's about it.

Well, of course there are superficial similarities, they both deal with vampires. But the main reason why it's incomparable (in my opinion) is due to the inherent theme behind it.

True Blood is a juxtaposition between two stereotypically incompatible worlds, namely The Deep South and Eldritch creatures of the night, for entertaining effect. The hyperbole is essentially making a mockery of both worlds, and the underlying message is more "being different sucks in the deep south", rather than a true vampire story. It's not surprising that Alan Ball was so eager to get involved for the tv series.

While the "taking itself seriously" vibe from VtM can at times be unintentionally funny, I do love the franchise. The lore is astoundingly good and intriguing, very rich in biblical and religious symbolism and Machiavellian politics and intrigue. Plus I've always found their version of Caine absolutely fascinating, but that might be because I like an emphasis on duality in my fictional characters. Some of the stuff written in the Lilith handbook about their relationships and stuff is awesome(ly disturbing).

Which is why a lot of people were somewhat saddened by the white wolf reboot of the Vampire world to be more like modern vampire mythos. The vampires don't quite sparkle, but lots of depth and background was lost in the reboot, to make it more accessible and less controversial.

I was never able to fix a crash-to-desktop problem in this game, every time I'd travel anywhere the game would bomb to desktop with some .dll error. The only fix iirc was running it in some ridulously low resolution so it was basically "painting by numbers" graphics wise.

If I recall correctly it doesn't work out of the box (even on Steam) on 64bit Windows and/or if you have a reasonable amount of memory, or support widescreen resiolutions?

    edit: Tyrus already confirmed this.

I wrote a complete guide on starting the game on page 1.

No, it does not work out of the box, but nor should you want to. The out of the box game is an unfinished game that is so bug ridden it is barely playable. Anyway, I touched upon this already (three times, actually).

    Edit: Link for the lazy

Yeah I know, I did fix the not starting problem because I can use Google, was more pointing out the general failness of downloading a game and not being able to play it "as is" without jumping through hoops.

Okay. Not that you're wrong on it being fail, but it's been explained a number of times that due to the bankruptcy of the company, the "as is" game isn't actually "as is", because there's no reason to EVER play the out of the box version. It's a shit awful, horrible unfinished piece of shit.

It's like watching a trailer for a movie and criticizing it for not being as comprehensive as the actual movie. It's technically true, but never relevant.

Mean no offense though, just something I thought about.

Well, I played it (and finished) as Nosferatu without any bugs/problems that I remember, Steam vanilla version. Went straight to my top 5 games. Will have to try that patch of yours.

I'm pleased as punch to see V:tM now frequently popping up beside friends' green avatar boxes on Steam.

You must be one of the luckiest men alive. The vanilla version has at least 5 bugs in the main story line that will irrevocably fuck your game, with a damn high frequency of showing up as well as a large number of quests that won't even work, a few quests that will somewhat work but bug out if you choose 3 of the 4 dialogue options and a notorious problem with sewer (water) areas that cause the game to CTD.

So yeah, good on you. Buy a lottery ticket.

Us Brujahs despise your airhead, pretty boy ways.

On a random note: Has anyone every done any PnP Vampire stuff? I've never done any pnp roleplaying (the nerd factor was somewhat overwhelming), but my geeky side does kinda demand I try it at least once, and VtM seems like an awesome setting to do it in.

Bought a shitload of the books, drew up an entire chronicle for the Free State, started to gather the characters and then half the players quit playing for different reasons.
Played through the first 'canon' story about the Giovanni, part 1 of 3 I think it is, forgotten it's name.
    Coming soon(tm).

Damn. I've read through most of the books for shits and giggles, but don't own them.

If you're anywhere near Amsterdam, I know 2 other people who would like to try this. ;p

I did a little bit of Cam PnP, which was good, and quite a lot of LARPing of both (yeah, yeah, lolLARP). Sabbat is an absolutely awesome game to do as a LARP, because you don't have to worry about politics as much as with a Cam game, you get to use alternate morality paths which are great fun, and the solution to almost every problem is to try and kill it (if possible while screwing over the other packs in the game).
    Domination.

    Great game.
    Great posting from Roam.

Done Gangrel (vanilla), Nosferatu and Malkavian so far and will do Toreador one day. Tend to play once every couple of years. For story and immersion, graphics aside, it's one of the greats.

Love the vampire universe (used to play the pen and paper game), tried it ages ago but didn't get into it. This thread has given me the urge to give it another go.

For those who haven't played/beaten the game before:

Don't talk to Rosa before the beach gang leaves (which is around the time of the second LaCroix mission.)

    Why?

      Spoiler:

Because her predictions are actually true, and she tells you basically how to win the game and who will fuck you over by her cryptic statements. The couch guy is Mercurio, and the lone wolf is Beckett. To a degree everybody else fucks you over. The "Don't open it." line is referring to the Ankaran sarcophagus. Where do you want to go? references the cab driver's questions at the end.

Oh and being a seer like that means she's 99% likely Malkavian, only it hasn't gone batshit on her yet.
