With all due respect to indeterminancy and Mrenda, I don't think serious discussions on the internet are impossible. I do believe that they require all participants to be actively willing to police their own actions and behaviors, be committed to a serious discussion, and be willing to see that other people are not posting with malicious intent. i.e. give the benefit of the doubt to others in ambiguous cases.

Far too often people project what they think of a poster onto that person's messages, coloring their view of them. Serious posting requires a great deal of mental dedication to recognizing when you're doing that, and stopping yourself before you let that bias inform your post.

As for the topic at hand, I'm not sure Failheap is the best place for this sort of experiment, but it certainly can't be the worst place either. I look forward to seeing what happens in the coming months.

As for what approached being on topic, if you want to temper the so-called knee-jerk reactionism and use of memes with "more thoughtful, well-informed discussion" then there have been plenty of people posting practical suggestions here on how to do that in General Discussion which it seems you're studiously ignoring.

My exact point is that so far it's only one thread. Give it time, see if it turns into a useful forum, slides into being a cesspit, or simply withers on the vine. You're taking it very personally when you really don't have to. That can't be good for your health.

The point to the Serious Business forum is to have a different tone. It should be slower paced, more thoughtful, well-informed discussions. Not knee-jerk reactionism and memes.

My problem with srsbsns threads on any forum is that sure there's a way to police trolling, but eventually someone is going to post something that's at best misleading and quite likely down right objectively wrong. Then it just ends up with 9 people telling them they're wrong, the one person holding out, and the conversation being dominated by that.

Arguments on the internet are generally spoiled by the extremism of the internet. To use an unsubtle example: instead of nine people posting constructively about global warming or (to go derper) evolution, it ends up as an argument with someone who believes in creationism, and that's just pointless.

That way we can have tears from bads as well as letting people read the forum and not split the community.

Everyone can already read it, you just have to be a member and have the correct opinion if you want to post in it.

You're right, there is nothing to say or argue about with Global Warming. The "Serious Business Discussion" comes after the first ten seconds when someone says, "Global Warming?" and someone else says, "Yep! What do we do about it?" And if you were to suggest, "Terraforming" as the most immediate thing possible to counter it then I wouldn't have a discussion with you about it.

There are some arguments and discussions that can be dismissed instantly and straight out of hand because to argue about it is simply a waste of time. I have no intention of arguing with someone about Global Warming or Evolution because to oppose either of those things, when there's such a vast amount of proof for both is a waste of time and energy. What's the point in arguing about them? You're not going to convince me the earth was created in seven days. No rational thinker could believe the earth was created in seven days. To even suggest it would be proof that you're not capable of having a conversation. I get no pleasure from "winning" pointless arguments. I mean I'm not going to convince the millions of people who ignore the overwhelming evidence for a lot of these typical arguments. What's the point in me even trying? I'll move on from the basic debate, talk about what I can and should be doing to improve the situation given that I've written off some people, and hopefully pick up the middle ground.

Shouldn't you just add all forum members to the new group and simply remove them if they displease overlord sofia? Why exactly is it hidden by default? If you absolutely insist people must be vetted to join the group then make that sub-forum read only for non-members and need approval to post but don't hide it...
