    Junk mail

I got home today and found that someone had sent me a letter inviting me to purchase an Audi A6. I think that's the most valuable item anyone's attempted to sell me via physical targeted marketing (list price at least £30,000). That's not a lot less than my gross annual salary, and I'm not even in the market for a car. Has anyone else here been subjected to any equally mismatched spam?

I get advertisements for new condos that cost at least a million dollars in the mail at my shitty $800/month apartment all the time. They shove them into everyone's mailboxes.

It's pretty funny and stupid. It's like "hey there, you live in a crappy apartment. We have million dollar condos available if you prefer!

They blanket an area. It's not exclusively about you buying that apartment, it's about it being in your mind. Since it gets you to post on FHC it may also get you to mention it to other people who may have the money. They also may want to build an image of the product, in much the same way you see enormous Rolex advertisements. They're selling to the 1% but want the remaining 99% to be jelly.

Oh I'm familiar with the advertising industry and the fact that a return of 1% on a marketing campaign is considered good (or mind-blowing in the case of a million dollar condo that would pay off the whole campaign by selling one or two). However this is clearly wasted on the building and they could easily target homeowners or places with higher income apartments. It's not difficult to realize that there are no apartments in the area with rents over 1200k/month and none of us even look at these junk letters. It's sloppiness that ends up looking like a gaffe.

I got a letter today for a smallish company I run, inviting me (as a company), to become a supporter of this year's "Oktoberfest" in the city (which isn't Munich btw).

To get in, I'd just have to help them funding by giving them a "fixed contribution" of 10k €. This would of course give me the opportunity to gain a public appearance and do some great PR etcetc.

Well, this company of mine does nothing but hold some shares of other companies and it certainly isn't supposed to have a public appearance.

The letter was riddled with typo's and it was signed by "Uli" and "Harald" (forgot the real names) who weren't even in the list of directors of the company or anything. So, off to google it was.

Found the company in the official register and 'lo and behold, the court intended to delete the company by the end of 2010, reason being "lack of funds". But it seems, that someone picked it up again and there's even an annual statement 2011 filed. The statement is rather funny though, because the company has assets netting 5k € (I guess that's some office stuff that isn't written off yet but is in fact worthless) and that's about it. This is identical to 2010 btw.. The net equity of the company is the usual 25k € (that's the minimum amount in my country for this kind of company), but the only other relevant content of the statement is a debit carryover netting to 23.5 k €. So the company does in fact have absolutely nothing and has done absolutely nothing for the last two years.

If you go to their newly designed highly professional website you can see, that the big Oktoberfest takes place in, well duh, October this year and will be absolutely epic and shit.

They just started "funding" (some might say scamming) and have absolutely nothing. I smell great and epic success and a bit of olice: in the coming near future.

    Several years ago:

    "Is this Nordstern?"
    "...Yes."
"blah blah blah we can refinance your mortgage--"
"Really. How much is my mortgage? And what's my interest rate?"
    "uhhhhh..."
"And do you even know if I own a house or rent an apartment?"
    "I--"
"Okay, listen. I'm 23 and I live with my parents. So I'm not even eligible. Let's cut the crap. What's the lowest possible interest rate you could offer us?"
"About five-and-a-half percent." (kudos on him for getting straight to the point)
"Okay. Your competition called five minutes ago and offered five-and-a-quarter. I could go out on the Internet and get four percent if I really looked. So next time, do some fucking research on your customers before you waste my time. And yours."

    (hang up)

Haven't gotten a financial solicitation since.

Just because they live in a cheapo apartment doesn't necessarily mean they are poor. I've known plenty of quite well off people that have lived in low rent places for a number of reasons. Maybe they just recently got a raise and are sticking out the lease or are waiting for their new property to be built. Could be they only need a tiny ass apartment at the moment. All these people would be more interested in those condos than a suburban home owner.

Yes. That's right. They got a raise from low pay to million dollar condo money and are waiting out the 1 year lease.

I've known someone that did that. Not a raise but a new job.

In fact most people live on the cheap side when they are saving for a place.

Hey maybe some of them are multi millionaires who just don't feel like moving because they don't need a bigger place or a place devoid of cockroaches. Anything is possible. Indeed some of them may be foreign royalty.

It's just not likely. That's my point.

$120,000 pa mortgage on a 1 million place? lolwut?

$900,000 loan since you need a minimum of 10% deposit, in reality that deposit should be more. Bog standard 5.79% interest rate 30 year mortgage. $5,287 per month payments.
e: and those rates are high compared to most of the rest of the world.

Yes it's a jump from $800 a month but for a guy still living in his crappy student apartment or bachelor pad getting a job and a serious relationship it's nothing extraordinary.

I have no sexuality listed on facebook, and so all the ads I get are for gay dating services.

    Does that count here?

Statistically, people who have hidden sexuality are gay.
    Contract stuff to Seraphina Amaranth.

Oddly enough, now that I might actually need to get some double glazing as a few of the windows are a bit fucked I've not had a single call from anyone trying to sell double glazing.

THEY are still at mind reading level 1.
    Give them a few years.

All the spam i ever get is travell discount offers. Which is odd because viagra, condoms and russian mail order brides are more fitting for me.
