Short story - Im a scientist. I have a deadline in exactly 7 days for a really big publication I am writing. There was one crucial hugely important experiment left to do - essentially I was to take two proteins, put them together and figure out what they do to each other.Fucked over how man?
The two proteins need to be purified from cells - so I purified one and assigned the other to a talented PhD student I work with. This guy is smart but works wierd hours and basically I dont like him. But hes talented with protein purification.
So the last two weeks we were both purifying proteins. This involves sending off a cell line to a commercial fermentor where they grow huge amounts of the cells and send them back to us. Then we squish them and purify the protein. This was supposed to be done by yesterday.
So 10pm last night and this PhD student hasnt turned up to work. I call him and hes still at home. I ask him for the protein and he just says "It didnt work".
To cut a long story short - it eventually transpired that the guy sent the WRONG strain to the fermentors and we have received back 100 LITRES of the wrong cells. At a cost of almost £10,000. The student hadnt bothered to check the cells when he received them 10days ago and only realised the problem when he didnt produce any protein. And then he hides at home all day too chicken shit to let me know so I could rebook the fermentors.
So of course I call fermentors today - closed till after the Olympics. My deadline is in 7 days.
And of course the PhD student goes on holiday for 2 weeks tomorrow.
So I have to culture 100litres of new cells at work. I barely have supplies. I have to fedex everything for monday. I can get the cells all grown by monday night by my estimate. The purification then takes 50 man hours.
Gonna be a squeeze.
And he hasn't said sorry.

Hope you get it sorted. Make sure you take as much credit as you can for it and make sure he's thrown fully under the bus for letting you down man.
I'm still under forty. For another couple of weeks at least...How old are you Rodj thought they only gave flu vaccine to over 50's or people that already have health conditions.
You're right that in the UK you only get a shot if you need one, but in some other countries I believe the advice is for everyone to get a shot if they can afford to pay for it.

Every night I could whisper the name of the student while blowing cold air on her (they hate that). Pavlovian her up, let her know who the one true enemy is.
Then... one morning he wakes up with a uninvited guest lieing on his belly.
