School was good, but 3rd year uni onward was way better.
went to private school, missed out on all of this kinda shit, am quite glad
Went to a public school, avoided this by spending most of my free time either in my next class reading a book or working on homework.
Also, glad to say my favorite teacher from my last two years of high school did in fact chuck erasers and chalk at the lot that would always sit in the back and fall asleep or muck about.
Wow, some shitty schools in this thread.
I went to public school in a rural town, was in the "university prep" stream which seems to be what you Brits call A level. My school was a technical school so we had an awesome machine shop, automotive garage, welding/metalworking shop, carpentry, and an electronics lab. I loved that stuff and took those courses all the way through so I wasn't just with the A level crowd all the time.
Was of course a fight here and there, but it was the exception. Weed was fairly common, nbs since the stuff is grown all over the place in rural Canada. The police went around with sniffer dogs a couple times a year to keep the dealers on their toes.
Edit: Also some awesome teachers here and there. I was in contact with my discrete math teacher recently, he was overjoyed that I went on to get my bachelor of comp sci and make it into the workforce in the software development field. Apparently he was discouraged since few students have an interest in his course, and he wasn't sure even the ones who passed would do anything with it. He lit right up when I told him I breezed through first and second year algorithms due to his course. :feelsgood:

I was caught in the middle. I was smart, and because I went to a central school (k-12 with all the same people for every grade) I got hated for it early on and it kinda stuck. But then I made the basketball team which in a small town was a demi god status. I then worked my way up to a good guy greg level footing with my classmates and fucked off to college my senior year of high school because I had nothing better to do with my life at the time. We had the usual druggies, a few troubled types.. a few fights. And one time an Anthrax scare. That's about it though.
My mom however. She works for a Alternative Ed school that focuses on career and technical education (read, these kids won't work in society any other way unless we get them working) She keeps counting down the years.
Reading this thread, two common themes occur. 1) Punishments that aren't punishing enough and 2) Kids who aren't parented enough. It is a problem.

TMA 14 year old Jewish vigilantism, Chakrai, this sounds funny
Went to private school for the first year of secondary, but my mum pulled me out of it and sent me to the local grammar school because she thought I was being bullied (I wasn't, I just hadn't made many friends). At the new place I did actually get bullied, got beaten up, got my wrist broken etc. Nice one mum.
Also it's amazing how much worse the teaching was, and even the good teachers had to waste half their time dealing with the retards and loudmouths.
There's a school I get sent to occasionally that is a Jewish faith school. Me and every other supply teacher on the circuit fights to get sent to this school because the kids are perfect. Not just good but perfect. You don't get the slightest bit of backchat and just get to actually do your job and teach something while you are there. I don't know what they do differently but there is an actual culture of wanting to learn, respect for teachers and general politeness.
Imagine my surprise on my last visit when four Year 9 boys laid an elaborate ambush for one of their classmates and beat the ever-loving shit out of him. It was so far out of the character of the place that I actually asked one of the involved boys what had happened when I taught him in the afternoon. His response was: "He had been nasty to a substitute teacher, and we don't want to give out that sort of impression about our school. So we made sure he wouldn't do it again". Spoken with all the frankness of Michael Corleone.
I remember this one teacher we had, called Mr Raeztel, who came in halfway through the year to replace our science teacher who'd gone on maternity leave. The class I was in just did not give a fuck, they would talk loud as shit to each other throughout the lesson. He would say "quiet now, thankyou" in a thick German accent, in increasing volume. That would shut them up for maybe 2 minutes tops, before the volume of chatter started rising again. I always felt really sorry for that guy.
Oh, and one time in DT the class was getting unruly for some reason, so the teacher went and got the other DT teacher, who was this big bellied, bearded guy and he proceeded to shout at us at maximum volume about how terrible we were for like five minutes.
