So, why don't I teach anymore? Well, I was working a 60% contract for the final semester of a school being closed for Title V violations. Went to a one day conference the district was holding for all the staff being dislocated, and came back to find that my six of my 1st period kids had gotten drunk off ever clear and vomited all over my desk, computer, and the substitute. Sub decided to leave for the day, and the office didn't send a replacement. My TA and another student snuck away, hid out in the girls bathroom, and gang raped a 7th Grader.

My school tried to cover up the whole thing to avoid a liability lawsuit, and convinced the girl not to press charges. Both boys got a five day suspension and transfer to a new school.

I raised enough of a fuss to get a disciplinary action in the principal's record, but he wound up taking an early retirement buyout offer and not much came of it.

I was so disgusted with the school district and the profession in general at that point that I never taught again. Lucked into a job running school outreach and public relations for a college with double the salary and half the workload, and haven't looked back since.

Regarding rich kids, one of those at the school I had that internship saw me checking my Desire HD. We got talking about cell phones and he told me that he just bought a new iPhone (this was spring 2011). He also continued on about how he promptly lost it the same day. I told him that at least he will now know every month where his money is going, into a contract that he does not have the phone for anymore. At that point he told me he bought it unlocked for some €800 and will buy another this day. I almost lost it there, asked him how he can afford to spend €1600 in two days, I could live 3 months from that. Apparently his father was beyond loaded. Comment from one of the teachers: no surprise then about his complete lack of motivation to do anything in school.

Public school however in Germany private schools are either extremely elitist (such as Schloss Salem) or alternative education style schools (such as Waldorf or Sudbury).

I went to a private military boarding school, ABH/GBH regularly occurred in the form of punishments visited on the younger members of the school. It still amazes me that no-one was charged.

    oh fuck yes waldorf

I had a guy from a waldorf-style school in my music course years ago, 1/3-1/2 of their class flunked the first fucking year of secondary school (the schools can decide on how they teach, but they still have targets given by the state. So at the end of the year, la la la work at your own pace kids meant that math = impossibru!)

    That's a, iirc, 15000€/year school.

They were also the only school to get the solution book delivered together with the math book when I worked in a bookstore during the summer, preparing pallettes of schoolbooks for a couple dozen viennese schools.

I actually like the idea of Waldorf, as quite a few other concepts. However these kids need to be in either a Waldorf school or a regular all their school life with no switches. The teaching styles are too different to allow for switching, either one will destroy the kid and its ability to ever do well. I know quite a few kids from Waldorf schools who did well at German Universities, as Unis here favor a 'do as you see fit' approach rather than strict curriculum and classes and homework and such nonesense. Our Unis mostly do not care how you get yourself into shape for passing the exam at the end of the semester as long as you do. However that is changing to a more school like approach.
My mother worked along her teaching as a consultant for violence prevention across the county and has also traveled to conferences etc on democratic education. She has been a teacher for 30 years now and used to be quite conservative in her views on education, but she has adopted the idea that such alternative teaching methods and styles are actually a way forward to deal with the students we have nowadays. Also Waldorf / democratic education does not need to mean the kids can freely chose when to learn what, most alternative school types I know of actually give weekly goals to reach to their students focusing their efforts, monitor progress and ensure reaching state goals.

Went to a private school and got mugged and beaten alot until I was 16.

Worst part is that it was mostly younger kids (10-13) including girls. Just big groups of them would work as wolf packs, totally outnumbering us. We had to walk to bus stop in big groups or with a several teacher escort (single teachers would get assaulted too). Amusingly, it reinforced good behaviour at school - because if you got detention after school, it meant staying late after school finish... which meant leaving to go to the bus stop alone (and usually in darkness at this point)... worst muggings happened then.

Scariest part was when they met you with cans of coke. They would shake them up and then hurl them at you. A full can of coke hurtling at your head can cause serious problems.

Christ, to think we thought of ourselves as cool and edgy, sneaking off after school to smoke cigs and experiment with weed at 13-14, highschool was mainly just skipping class. I can't remember a single violent incident happening at our (public) high school in the whole 4 years.

I went to an ex-Grammar school, managed to mess up most of my A-levels, and now I work in e-learning at a Uni. Go figure.

Worst we had was the occasional punch-up, and the teacher's throwing those old wooden board erasers at the trouble makers.

OP: what's the most depraved thing you've seen in a school? The kinda thing that lucian posted, that made you want to sterilize someone or leave the profession.

We managed to force one of our IT teachers/technicians out of the school by getting access to his hotmail account and setting him up on all sorts of fucked up sexual websites (swingers, bestiality, dogging) and uploaded a ton of sick pictures scattered with a few headshots of him.

all the school printed them out, teachers got to see them, he denied it of course but when the parents found out he was torn to shreds.

None of the alleged indecencies were particularly bad but he lost all credibility after that.

Man we were real cunts back then.

You didn't go to a proper school if you didn't see at least one teacher clock a pupil square between the eyes with a board eraser.

When we were at prep in the evenings (homework for you scrubs who didnt go to a private boarding school) we were kept in line by the house prefects. If someone was being a tool they were hit with the fucking massive enclopedia on the head by the prefect. After they had recovered from their concussion (literally one guy i knew was hit so hard that his face hit the desk and hee got knocked out) he was given the book and the job of hitting the next tool. By the time prep was over the room would be as silent as the grave. Man were we afraid of that book.

Same for me. Although not for the most part. I was bullied heavily in school and after grade 11 I decided to fuck off to the US for a year, went to high school there, got back and did the remaining two years of school (my state had 13 years of school for A levels) in a different grade. After I got back it was hilarious. School's over for the day, we went to the store and bought a case of beer for every two of us every day, hit the park, got drunk.

I went to public school in Miami, that alone should tell you how fucked up it was. However it was in a the better part of town, but still I got the short end of the stick. Got beaten up every single day, got locked in a locker for a day and half, was used as a scape goat, got suspended at least 9 to 10 times, got manipulated to unpleasant things, nearly drowned in a pool, and mostly just difficulty just learning the material, as I said I am a very big stupido. I never want to go to high school, ever, ever again or middle school.
