Nope. I do everything I can to stay aloof from the kids and not get into much conversation (unless I'm on a long-term assignment). As a supply teacher I'm automatically considered the outsider by the rest of the staff which means that anything remotely dodgy or inappropate - even if it is just a girl deciding she fancies me - means I can lose a lot of work.

also what is the mythical staff room actually like

do you all sit around naked discussing poetry like one of my FELLOW CLASSMATES thought you did?

or do all the maths/physics guys sit in one corner, and the arts/english dudes sit in another, and they only meet at the tepid coffee machine?

Is there much violence in schools in Liverpool towards teachers? I do some youth work on the Wirral and I've heard stories about chairs been thrown at the teachers.
How do you deal with the high pitched nature of scouse girls voices? :-/ Drives me insane
haha you went to a nice school if you thought that shit was relegated to the wirral

See above poast. Although the chair wasn't aimed at me. I have had a mobile phone thrown at me a few times. The last time I could have easily caught it but just let it smash against the wall. One of the biggest problems with supply teachers and violence is that we don't know the kids in the way that normal teachers do, so we have no way of knowing if a child has nay anger issues or is sensitive over something.

Science departments usually have their own prep room where they discuss how the rest of the school hates them and are conspiring to put pressure on the science department. This happens no matter how good the school is or how well the science department is funded.

Did you ever hit the girls because they hit on you?

    Also,
Have you ever had a fire alarm go off and then have kids hide under the table and throw shoes across the room?

Your posting is medium, its not rare and its not well done

I would have thought it was worse in Liverpool tbh. I guess you can't really tell us which was the worst school in Liverpool to work with can you?

This is standard bottom set fare. Too few schools have proper special educational support for their bottom sets so you end up with a mixture of lazy spawn of dolescum (to be blunt) and those with genuine learning difficulties, neither of whom are being taught in an appropriate manner (the two groups are basically incompatible tbfh) and therefore neither have any interest in learning, so just feed off each other trying to cause as much havoc as possible. Casual violence is just something that happens and unfortunately all too often it is just accepted, as schools lack either the resources or will (more often both) to deal with it properly.

Naming no names. Mainly because of professionalism, but also you would be amazed at how often schools google themselves and do everything they can to take down anything they don't like.

This. I'll make a proper poast about it tomorrow when I'm less sleepy.

Liverpool sounds like a great place for a nuclear test. Also what kind of school system only suspends someone for a day for something so violent?

in my own experience, schools seem quite unenthusiastic to actually expel someone. maybe they lose money or something? idk, OP can educate us. one summer there was a craze of chasing the year below around the field, then kicking the fucking shit out of them. one boy got caught, and a guy in my year basically jumped on his neck. kid suffered compression fractures on his spine, was in hospital for fucking ages and has to wear a fucking brace now

the dude that did it, 8 weeks suspension. if that was in the adult world, he'd be in fucking prison.

It's actually really hard to get expelled in England, christ knows I tried when I was in school.
Throwing chairs was a daily sport it escalated into dying the pool purple and burning fuck off big holes in tables with stolen magnesium from the science department that and selling fags for 50p on the sly and fingering girls while bored shitless in maths.

I actually had a great school experience, well obviously not academically.

Now I don't know if this is nostalgia at work but my high school was a 30% aboriginal low socio-economic shithole with a bad rep and I don't remember any violence on such a level occuring. That said i'm very tempted to show this thread to my dad to show how lucky he is to teach at a Grammar school.

I taught various web-related subjects at a tertiary institution for ~3 years. The staff room I remember was quite small; usually it wasn't a problem as the timetable was well staggered, except around lunchtimes when it was always packed. Big windows letting in lots of sun, great in the winter, curtains usually pulled in the summer.

The best part of the staff room there was actually the other staff. I've worked in retail, in the media and in marketing, but by far the staff room with the most intellectual discussion was the one when I was teaching. None of the usual lowbrow shit like what was on TV last night, it was typically related to the subjects being taught by whoever was there at the time, particularly interesting problems etc. Being surrounded by smart people who were clearly passionate about their work was great.

Sadly, the building was damaged beyond repair in the earthquakes. Last time I was up in Christchurch a few weeks back I drove past to see just an empty shell of concrete that was slowly being brought down with a crane.
