    Higgs Boson finally discovered?

So, according to CERN webcast at http://webcast.web.cern.ch/webcast/play_higgs.html they found a new particle with certainty of 5 sigmas which is enough for a discovery. Also http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/bl...-coverage-cern

Well, 4.9 in total. Might be something else than Higgs because of some irregularities. Or just :rng:

Hello? Oh, hello! I'm sorry it's a very bad line. No, no no... but that's not possible, she was sealed in to the Seventh Obelisk after the prayer meeting. Well, no, I get that it's important... an Egyptian Goddess loose on the Orient Express. In Space. Give us a mo....

... don't worry about a thing, your Majesty; we're on our way.

Finally, we can now start speculating about supersymmetric particles

first post in the comments is great.

      Spoiler:
In the greatest of ironies, proof of a God particle might prove the non-existence of God.

The bitter destructor of all conversations part of me wants to reply to it with

The other part of me wants to say

It's a mistake to think that the quantifiable has any relation to a mental spiritual belief. Strictly speaking god being the beginning and end of all things god has an incredible armor against things. To bring religion in to a discussion about science only does two things, it detracts from science and cheapens both science and religion. They are not and will never be on the same playing field.

I'm going to be perfectly honest and say I'm disappointed we didn't get to see a miniature black hole form. That would have been phenomenal to get real live data on, confirm hawking radiation, etc. Of course, as I recall "Might form a miniature black hole." was somewhere down around "seagulls from the future are sabotaging the LHC to prevent a paradox." on the probability scale.

So, uh. Go awesome real science, but dammit I wanted more explosions and black holes!

I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those Thukkers, that way I wouldn't have to have any goddamn stupid useless conversations with anybody.

I hope this leads to significant scientific advances so I can go back in time and murder the mother of whoever coined the term "god particle".

couldn't you just murder the author prior to coining? seems a bit harsh on the mother

they aren't exactly turning it off now.

the large hardon collider could still destroy the world.

CMS are at 4.9 overall, but one of their datasets renders a 5.0 signal. ATLAS are at 5.0 proper in exactly the same range. Nobels all round.

Fucking awesome. I know a lot of physics researchers who are going to be very drunk tonight.

Usually this inappropriate nickname for the Higgs boson is attributed to Leon Lederman, the author of the book The God Particle: If the Universe Is the Answer, What Is the Question?, but the name is the result of the insistence of Lederman's publisher: originally, Lederman had intended to refer to it as the "goddamn particle".

Great work done by the people invovled and amazing how they've analyzed that staggering amount of data in such a short time so far. Now I got a good excuse to talk about particle physics for the next week or so and I can't wait for the time they start looking past 1.4TeV particles
