    Tour De France 2012

Not sure if anyone else is following the 99th Edition of the world's highest profile cycling race but it started last night with a 6km Prologue in the Belgium city if Liege. Victory went to Fabian Cancellara who blitzed the field, winning by 7 seconds over Bradley Wiggans. Big favourites this year appear to be Wiggans and defending champion Cadel Evans due to the time trials in this years race. It should be an exciting race even if the route this year doesn't feature as many chances for the climbers.

Really wanted to see Andy win one outright, but even before the broken hip he wasn't in terrific form this year. Another character I'll be missing this year is Thor. I think I'll pull for Wiggins...it's his turn. This year's race format was supposedly designed to lessen the influence of the mountain stages on the overall outcome, so it will be interesting to see how team tactics come into play. Still, the main reason I watch the tour is to see the world's best leaving their guts out on the Tourmalet or Alp d'Huez or Ventoux...I'm sure this year will be just as exciting!

    SPARTACUS!

Too bad Martin had the puncture, would have been interesting to see him contest the win.

    My favourite rider by far

It does look good for Wiggins, but Evans will give him a hell of a fight. Hesjedal was absolutely awesome in the Giro, would enjoy seeing him do well in France but only he knows how deep he had to dig in Italy. Nibali is a favorite hope of mine for the yellow jersey, but not sure about his form.

I hope it will be a good race with Voeckleristic heroics!

One thing to remember about the mountains in the past few Tours is that putting more hasn't resulted in better viewing. Last year's tour saw the Pyrnnes being a total non-event, with the big guns leaving it to the final two days in the Alps to excite things. So I still think the mountains will be critical this year. Evans is a better climber than Wiggans, but not as good a time trialler. With that said hes an awesome time trialler too just not on Wiggans' level. So I think it comes down to how much time Evans can get back on Wiggans on the mountains where hes a better climber. In the Dauphine he got back some time on the mountain stages but not enough to offset Wiggans' advantage from the time trial. Some commentators are wondering whether Wiggans has peaked too early or not, others saying Evans is still struggling for form after a disrupted season. Guess we will see

As for the others - there doesn't seem to be another rider whose "complete" enough to win overall. Frank Schleck is atrocious at the time trial, and on similar climbing level to Evans. Nibali is basically Evans but not quite as good (but crazy downhill...), others such as Gesink, Leipheimer, Hesjedal will be competetive but just don't seem to be on the same level imo. In reality this race is missing the two other top GC riders in Andy Schleck and Alberto Contador so thats why it feels strange just picking out two riders as top contenders.

Once again great riding from the one and only Cancellara! That's the way to defend the yellow

Superior TdF debut from Sagan as well. He could have pulled a bit, though.

Well he doesn't have to pull if he doesn't want to, takes the risk that the group hes with will get overhauled but if they don't hes got a greater chance of winning. Risk vs reward etc.

Good sprint on stage 2, nice to see Cavendish show his class by winning without a train. Griepel almost had him though he barely got overhauled.

Great closing stages to the stage today, couple of crashes broke up the peloton resulting in a great chase on narrow roads over rolling hills.

Sagan's win was pretty convincing too as Cancellara was well placed to extend his lead in the GC by a few more seconds, wouldn't be surprised if Sagan takes green this year if he keeps riding like that.

Depends if Cavendish drops out for the Olympics or not. Theres alot more flat finishes in which Sagan won't even be in the top 5 and theres not really anymore finishes like todays for him to take advantage on. If Cavendish does drop out I suspect either Gripel or Goss will win the green if they're still in the race.

Not convinced Cav will do it this year without the teams support. I reckon he'll grab a few stage wins when the opportunity presents itself as he probably has half an eye on closing the gap at the top for most stage wins. I would love to see Team SKY bag both the yellow & green jerseys though.

Not been following the form of Griepel & Goss so you may well be right, but you got to love a cheeky young upstart looking to upset the establishment.

Well the latest stage shows why predicting anything in cycling is difficult. Would loved to have seen Cav and Griepel head to head. I think we can discount Goss though, he just isn't at the same level.

Yup. I think Petacchi's legs are getting a little old for sprinting with the young'uns too. Sagan does look inexperienced some times, not quite timing his breaks or reading what the others are doing around him. That train for Griepel yesterday was textbook.

Today's stage looks p.flat so more points for the sprinters, hopefully Wiggo can stay out of trouble too.

I love watching the sprints but I can't wait for the real action to start, looking forward to Stage 7 on Saturday, should see riders like Schleck and Gesink attack hard on the climb to the finish because they need to get time wherever they can with the way the route is laid out for this year's tour.

Will be a close one this time I think!
I'm looking forward to hearing in a couple of years, after all the doping disqualifications, who actually won it!

"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Tor. Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"
