Cannot seem to change boot device on older Laptop

friend of mine dropped off an old Acer Travelmate 240 (2.8 celeron, 256mb DDR2 etc) old laptop to potentially be salvaged as a facebook portal. It currently has XP home on it installed still from like 2003.

When i re-arrange the boot media order so i can try and boot from CD, it just seems to ignore the CD drive. like, i'll put CD on the top, then removeable media, then network book then hard drive. I have tried with both normal CD drive, an external CD drive plugged in AND a USB stick with ubuntun10.10 on it and nothing is recognised. The only thing that seems to get a response is checking for LAN boot which obviously fails because i haven't set that up.

HALP PLZ? either we can try and troubleshoot the media thing, or we can try and set up install over network but i literally have NO idea how to do that.

Have you tried just having the cd player as the boot device and nothing else?

Some BIOS settings can allow you to scroll through the boot device options or "None". Is there a "none" option?
