We either do a loan from a Spanish bank who has a special deal for people doing the training or self-funded (ie family money), quite a few are self funded. For the ATPL is about £80k including all flying and sim hours, all exams and class hours. At the end you have to get a type rating on top of that which can be up to £25-30k, for some flying hours, sim hours and examinations.

For a private license you need 45 hours, it's about £120-150/hr depending on where you want to train, add a few hundred for exams and some ground classes for those exams. Adds up to about £5-5.5k.

As for airforce training, many forces pilots go into commercial as they have done most of the required flying hours and only need some ground training and exams as a cross over.

Learning to fly for the fun of it however, in the USA is around $8-$14k. It varies depending on what plane you're training in, and how long you take. Mine was around $12k, and I was using a DA-40 with the G1000 avionics.

Well worth doing - really, its awesome flying yourself and friends somewhere.
Of course, to do the full "zero to hero" program through an integrated school like Oxford will cost you about double the modular route, but you get to wear uniforms while you do it!

I know when I joined the Army I tried to be a helicopter pilot. They told me unless I could already fly a helicopter they really are not recruiting to train from scratch at the moment. I should have abused the influence I could have brought through my father and family friends but at the time I was unaware how high and far their reach was. It wasn't until my state Senator showed up in Afghanistan and he had heard about me did I realize how much these people talk to each other.

Yeah it'll only be in the future some time when I can blow several grand on training and then a couple hundred k on a plane an think nothing of it. Wanted to do the airforce route back when I was in highschool but after a couple of classmates who were better than me at that stuff flunked the entrance exam that kinda killed that idea.

There's a few of these http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PZL_TS-11_Iskra parked at the airport in my city and every time I go past I always think how awesome it must be owning a jet fighter.

    Hey, I can dream

They lied to you. Proof: Prince Harry.
Because Tellenta is clearly of the same stature as Prince Harry, and he graces us with his presence daily through the medium of Failheap Challenge?

Harry is a publicity stunt with the added benefit that he might actually do some good.
Also: Harry Hewitt joined the British Army. He probably would have been told the same thing as Tellenta if he had joined the US Army.

Meh, when I signed up for the Army it was damn near spur of the moment. I had a pair of associate degrees in my pocket and had finally decided to try for a bachelors (in finance) 3 semesters in I had the epiphany that I would kill myself if I had to do this shit for the rest of my life. I decided fuck it I'm joining the Army, signed up 3 days later. When I told my dad I was going to be a cavalry scout and airborne he gave the laughing "ohhoh geeez" he typically uses for witnessing horrific accidents where the people somehow walk out alive and well.

I am in no way shape or form an "important" person. My father on the other hand is on someones short list, poor bastard just dodged being talked in to starting a political career by the Michigan democratic party.

The festival I'm going to tomorrow (and sleeping at, in a tent, for 9 days) is advising people to stay away for now because shit's flooded.

I'm gonna get wet this week, lol

More than 20 years after the AIDS epidemic arrived in the United States, a significant proportion of African Americans embrace the theory that government scientists created the disease to control or wipe out their communities, according to a study released today by Rand Corp. and Oregon State University.

You don't have to get a type rating afterwards. You only pay for the type rating if you get a job. For the love of god, do not simply go and needlessly get a type on *anything* because they go out of date in ~6 months and must be, like most shit, kept current.

Not sure if thats what you meant but I wanted to say it just in case.

Lots of interference on the FM bands while driving to work today, with odd voices interjecting randomly from other channels.

Not sure I should be outside a bomb shelter right now. I've seen enough disaster movies to know where this is going.
