    C. Absolutely right. Imagine apple was doing something like this. They'd know better than to muddy up the waters. It surprises me how bad microsoft is at learning. Focus on the user, make it simple, make it one thing.

I'm under the impression everyone wants the same thing, which is basically a touchscreen laptop where the kb is optional. asus transformer was really interesting when they released it, but I didn't get one because android would annoy me if I tried to use it like a fully fledged OS.

Also lol at Ted's off the wall expectations for this thing.

Also also lol at the windows 8 UI debate. This always happens. Someone points out that a touch screen UI is retarded for a mouse interface and someone else says they're just mad because it's different.

You say that now but the transformer wad not new. You have been able to get windows tablets (with and without keyboards) since xp. It's not the form factor holding these back, its not even really Windows, its the apps. None of the existing windows apps work well or at all on a touchscreen, they all have issues. Even the core Windows apps work better with a mouse (fly out window tabs require you to hover over them, how do you do this with a touchscreen) and while windows 8 seems to actually fix this, absolutely zero 3rd party existing apps will support it right.

Microsoft should only be releasing one version, but it should be the rt version to prevent the clusterfuck that is the windows software world from fouling up this new environment.

Honestly, they have done so many huge derps in the design of it, first and foremost the classic "Design for everypony - Design for nopony"
Yet through what could be a really long and probably interesting essay about how to not design things, and what we can learn from the mistakes made, there are still some pretty awesome things going on under the surface

I think the people yelling about how it's gonna suck on release are right, and agree with the people who predict that they have over-extended and misplaced their focus and how that is going them

Yet i still think that the surface is going to be a pretty sweet bit of tech

    bumping this, prices are out:

    http://gizmodo.com/5952106/microsoft...s-8s-best-hope

$500 for the basic 32GB model, $700 for the 64GB with keyboard (looks like the keyboard is a $100 extra)

Except often American companies seem to think $1=£1 so I reckon it will probably be north of that.

    Sorry, just noticed this.

Barring battery life and all the improvements that get made each year on portability, I'm sure you're right that hardware like it has been available for a while. We did have the apple Newton 15 years ago if I were to be sarcastic and go that far. I'm not sure what was available with XP on it like you say but somehow I doubt it was as appealing. It's not like it has to be a revolutionary idea, it just needs to be well done. Nothing so far that I've seen appears to be what I'd want. Sadly, the surface comes closest for me because it runs winblows and not ios or android.

red in the paper this morning basic 32gb will be 310 in the Uk, plus 62 quid for a keyboard case.
that looks suspiciously akin to "divide Dollar price by exchange rate" :/
still - at that price are they cheaper than iPads ?

Isn't that when Visionary Market Leader Apple release a 7" tablet to compete with the 7" android tablets?

Or do you think the whole "will they won't they" macrumors drivel is because they plan to cut prices, despite Apple priding themselves on being a "Premium Equipment Manufacturer with a Premium price" against the constant background of "iPaid over the odds ergo iSuperior" ?

Sidenote: I wonder how long until Apple Sue Samsung et al for their 7" tablets looking identical to Apple 7" tablets...

    edit: Update:
Advancer orders for Microsoft's Surface tablet are now being taken in the UK. Prices starting at £399.

That'll get you a 32GB version of the ARM-based slate without the touch-to-type keyboard-equipped Touch Cover, which comes bundled for an additional £80. Buy the cover on its own and you'll pay £100.

Alternatively, those after more traditional, mechanical keys can splash £109 on the Surface Type Cover.

    {image}

The 64GB package meanwhile comes with the Touch Cover bundled whether you like it or not and is priced at £559.

The Microsoft Surface tablet - which packs a 10.6in display with a 1366 x 768 resolution, an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and 2GB of Ram - launches on 26 October. Microsoft says it will deliver all pre-ordered tablets by the end of the month.

If you think the new Microsoft slate is a little pricey, bear in mind Apple's iPad costs £659 with 64GB or £399 for the 16GB version, and the latest Asus Transformer Pad Infinity comes in around the £600 mark.

Nah, there is a ARM-based one and a regular x64 intel one (known as pro), i'm personally interested in a regular one since it basically lets me play eve and civ on it while the regular one will be limited to stuff developed for the ARM OS

I can see civil working well on touch, but only if it gets a touch interface.

The goal is to gatecamp in tama from my bed, through the interface of a touchpad, for the ultimate in lazycamping

    Regarding civ though, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugUu_-YOths
