Keith Gessen signed my copy of n+1 Mag #13 after a reading he gave tonight. We talked briefly about the Occupy movement, of which we were both involved (granted, he did it in NYC and got arrested for it.) I admit I left the event in a state of giddiness.

In other news, I convinced a friend to try eve, now i get multiple SMS every day asking how to do stuff. One time i had to walk him through buying an item from the market over the phone, from memory.

    ^^ Yep

I was on a working group for the mass demonstrations but it was basically disbanded shortly after the new year. The camp was small. Most of the people involved in my city including myself had some kind of job, so once the spring semester started and the students without jobs went back to school there were very very few people left to camp out anyway. Large-scale gatherings have been rather few and far between since the main camp was disbanded by the city.

Sounds like it didn't accomplish anything, since the small gatherings got basically 0 news coverage and can't even claim to have meaningfully contributed to whatever it is the occupy movement thinks it accomplished.

The combined effect of the entire movement nationwide forced the following issues into a greater light:
    1. the third world dictatorship level of income inequality in the States
    2. coordinated abuse of police authority, sometimes with the help of federal agencies
    3. that a newsworthy number of people from all walks of life care about these things

Locally, our city movement got a lot of news coverage during its time. Locally, everyone's city movement probably got some mention. That Oakland and NYC got national attention is hardly unexpected, since they were the areas of the movement's most dramatic moments.

What lasting effect any of this will have on policy decisions is anyone's guess. Can you quantify how much or how little the protests against the Vietnam war hastened its end? Same thing with civil rights protests and the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Anyone's guess, but it has to be better than nothing.

Comparing the ridiculous occupy crap with the Vietnam protests and the Civil Rights movement shows just how out of touch you really are.

This is a lot like some dude with a "I support gay rights" coffee mug saying he is part of the fight for gay rights.

But yea, congratulations for 'your' movement bringing those issues to greater light. Look at all that new policy that resulted from your hard work! Why we have the.....the......

    .....

Yea that's about how effective your movement was. And I use 'your' pretty loosely there.

I've got a feeling it'd be like that with me too if I got my friend(s) to start playing. Also, being the family tech support is a shitty job with no pay and thankless work.

There has been a significant amount of attention paid to wealth inequality in recent times. What impact the Occupy movement had in bringing attention to the issue I am unqualified to gauge.

What was the Occupy movement even about? As far as I could tell it was about pissing me (as a middle class worker) off by shitting up the streets and making me spend an extra 10 mins getting to work in the morning.

    So leave 10 minutes earlier?

Also working at a later time because 1: gym in morning and 2: movie (the grey) and food that company is paying for. Some things are worth it.
