At university, our lecturer set us a semester-long task to design a particular contraption. One guy tracked down the 1960s-era textbook he took the example from and submitted it the next day for full marks.

Ah, students.. I miss being one.

Will head out for first day at new workplace in a bit. Today is the day they predicted extra traffic crap due to thunderstorms, loads of rain, hail, etc. My cute little short term lease car will probably kill me by being blown off the highway. I'll either be just in time due to epic traffic probs or I'll be 45 mins early. Haha.

Subway is shit. Tiny little scraps of microwaved meat and salad that's been sitting in the counter for days. I know when I want to eat fresh I always think microwave.

v0v a while back some of my friends were obsessed with it and we'd go there a bit (around the time that guy got skinny in all the ads, let's all eat take away and get in shape!). All the ones I've been to have been like that.

Hmm fair enough. I tend to go to the popular ones in the city, where the stock moves so quickly that everything is fresh.

Yeah, the quality of Subway really seems to come down to the store more than anything else.

Went to the new doctor today.

    Started feeling

Was a little during the appointment,

    - but felt once it was over.

    This.

Bearing that in mind, today I plan on tidying the flat and applying for as many jobs as I can find. Sick of this place, time to move elsewhere.

So a friend of mine is looking at a job, things have gone along well and they are past the final interview. Now they want to do salary negotiations. Just for the sake of simplicity, let's say they requested $100 in salary and $15 for transportation.

The company offered them $85 in salary and $5 for transportation, so like 27% less than their request.

So the question is: when you're in a salary negotiation in a marketplace with 8% unemployment, just how much do you stick to your guns on your salary request and how much do you cave because a job is better than no job?

I know my own answer already but I'm curious what others think.

Exam over, not sure how I did as I had a splitting headache about halfway through. Finished early which is unusual for me but hopefully I didn't totally destroy my grade.

Fairfax announced this morning that it would shed 1,900 jobs over three years, close two printing plants, move its Sydney Morning Herald and The Age newspapers to tabloid format and introduce digital subscriptions for those two mastheads.

The changes have so far been well received by the Australian share market but Fairfax journalists have reacted with astonishment and the unions have demanded talks with management.
I for one was simply shocked to learn that newspapers aren't making money like they used to do.

Had to do some bullshit three hour FEMA certification online today. Found all the final test questions on google, got done in ten mins.

Looks like I'll be doing this shit all summer.

You put out a number. They reject it.

They put out a counter offer. You reject it.

    Now the real negotiation starts.

This depresses me a little. Yeah the neighborhood is utter gash, but some of those houses are beautiful even in a derelict state. Wish I could live in one of them (fixed up of course).

Not that I read the SMH, but I'd welcome a format change from broadsheet to tabloid. Trying to read The Aussie on your average budget airliner is basically impossible unless you have an aisle seat.
