funny anecdote: one of the professors gave us 4 essay questions to prepare for this exam. One will be in the exam to answer. So we formed a facebook group to discuss the questions and one question was about a really strange decision tree where you can say why a species is in a habitat/niche or not. So there was a lot of discussion about this tree and it turns out one genius simply emailed the scientist/professor that introduced this tree a few years ago. Turns out that it's a load of rubbish: "But many years ago Robert MacArthur pointed out to me that he (one of the early "fathers" of the niche approach) had given up on niche theory because the niche has an infinite number of dimensions and is thus impossible to describe fully. I think one can cut through this haze of ideas by asking exactly what question you wish to answer. [...] Niche theory could be make useful if it leads us to answering specific questions in ecology. In my view it has failed to be useful that way."
