There's really no relief. It had been on an upswing recently but at this point I really have no choice but to file and end things officially. I can't really go into details on a public forum (both out of respect for the situation and on the advice of my attorney) but at the end of the day, it's about both of us removing ourselves from a situation that's become toxic.

As for advice - make sure you're both ready. Yeah, you can say you are and you can think you are but don't further the commitment until you're actually positive. Live together first, make sure you really know each other and don't allow yourself to let little nagging things build. Consider pre-marriage counseling, approach problems in the relationship directly and make sure you stay the person who you are/who you want to be throughout. Additionally, just because you're upgrading your commitment with her doesn't mean anything else in your life changes. Make sure to keep a strong circle of friends, keep busy, etc.

I'm a huge proponent of long engagements; treat your engagement as if you were married - if you can survive a year or to of that you should be able to approach marriage in a much more mature way. Don't be in a rush to get married after engaging, don't let family or friends pressure you into doing it any sooner than you think you're ready. Keep the outlook that everything is incredibly fragile and encourage her to share the same viewpoint. You start to lose appreciation for the things you have as soon as they stagnate - never become complacent with what you have, always strive for more. Don't be afraid to lose her - it'll cloud your judgement. Remember that she wants to be there as much as you do, that's why she's there.

Then again we did 99% of this and it still failed. Don't get me wrong, I'm not down on marriage or anything like that. Marriage was awesome and I would never tell someone "don't get married", perhaps "don't get married yet". Yeah, it sucks that it finally came to this but right now I honestly think it's going to be what's best for us long term. We'll both meet other people and move on, it's just how life works and we'll most likely be happier for it.

I don't think it's that, so much as all the emo's come here to post about their shit. Though I do admit that the hotter a woman is physically, the less likely she is to be up on current events (that don't involve the Kardashians) or tolerant of things that aren't chic. It's a fairly basic function of what they need to get by, when a rich dude will pay your ticket just because you look pretty there's no real incentive to develop a personality.

I'm beginning however to think that this is a function of living in the silicon valley, being that my hometown has basically morphed into a hypercapitalistic freezone populated by carpet bagging out of state douche-bags and any girl above a 6 seems to think guys that don't drive european luxury cars aren't attractive. Then I go out of state a couple of times and end up having several one night stands with girls I thought were out of my league... I think I need to move.
