Apparently it was marketed as being a cure for masturbation among boys in the late 19th century or something like that and sort of caught on as a cultural norm. Pretty interesting I think even though it's an entirely ridiculous custom.

I know it's ancillary to what's being derped about, but HIV-1 jumped to humans possibly as early as the late 19th century. At least that's when it made a permanent home in humans. It's likely that humans living in west-central africa have been exposed to HIV for quite a bit longer than that but due to certain emergent factors, never took hold.
