Le Tennis Thread 2012

So we have an egg-chasing and a a thread about some footie tournament that, as a Scot, is a sport i've not been interested in for 14 years.
But what we don't have is a thread about the one great sport that is there for you every single summer.

This weekend is the weekend of the French Open finals: Sharapova v Errani, Nadal v Djokovic.
Next week we have Queen's and a week after that we have the beginning of the big one at SW19.

Today Sharapova to win in 2 reasonably close sets. Nadal in 3 tomorrow, he's been immense and Djokovic hasn't impressed.

It was painful how fast Federer lost the semi-final, it makes you ask yourself if he can really match up to Djokovic and Nadal anymore. I still hope Djokovic will win, but on clay Nadal shouldn't have a lot of problems.

I'd be less frustrated with Federer if Djokovic destroyed him or played out of his skin but he did neither. Federer played brilliantly to go a double-break up in the 2nd, and when he gave those away he did excellent to get another but as good as he was to get those breaks he was terrible in just handing them back to Djokovic.

To be honest though, neither of the two had played all that well this tournament. Federer was dropping sets early on to players in the past he'd be putting away with ease, and Djokovic was extremely complacent against Seppi to go 2-0 down and then lucky to survive Tsonga. The final should be one-sided and then we can look forward to Wimbledon where I hope Murray will be in Djokovic's side of the draw because the Serb is more beatable than Nadal.

Now the press hype will reach hilarious proportions as with the untimely exit of Nadal, Murray's guaranteed to get into the final because of course he just needs to turn up to his next matches and given that all his potential opponents prior to the final are "nobodies" they shall roll over before Murray the Great before allowing him to stride onto Centre Court in the final to reclaim the Wimbledon title for these great shores (inb4 failure in next round and obligatory "Scotsman Murray humilated by world number 237 from Turks and Cacos islands" style reporting).

There's been a press hype vacuum which would have been filled by the fact of the England footy team being in an international tournament whereby they're hyped into the ionosphere by the press and then fail horribly, this time the hype which is usually reserved for such an occasion will be transferred along with the usual Wimbledon related excitement into a giant cumulonimbus of expectation which will overwhelm Murray like so much rain in the North-East's sewer system.

He's still got an extremely tough draw just to reach the semi finals and a lot of people seem to forget that he still has to defeat Baghdatis tomorrow, then one of Cilic, Querrey or Raonic in round 4. Then in the QF he'll probably have to play the winner of Ferrer/Del Potro followed by Tsonga as the most likely Semi Final opponent. Individually he should win each match because he's the better player but it's far, far from certain that he'll win all 4 matches to reach the final.
