THE Tartan Army last night blasted bosses at Mars for changing the wrapper to support England at the World Cup AGAIN.

The choc bars have been decked out in a St George’s Cross and the Auld Enemy’s Three Lions badge.

Mars pulled a similar stunt in 2006 by re-naming the treat ‘Believe’ to back England’s failed bid for glory — raising hackles north of the border.

Last night Hamish Husband, spokesman for the Association of Tartan Army clubs, said: “It irritates the neutrals and people who don’t like England.

“A lot of people would like to support England. What stops them are these daft adverts, the media and the commentators racing to mention 1966.

“Can you imagine what Mars would produce if England ever actually won the World Cup again?”

Four years ago Mars attempted to appease Scots fans by changing the wrapper to a Saltire with the word ‘Believe’ and the year 2010.

But while the England team cruised through to next month’s finals in South Africa, Scotland flopped.

Last night a Mars spokesman said they “don’t want to offend”.

They added: “The Mars Bars featuring the new wrapper are intended for distribution and sale in England only.

“However, it is incredibly difficult logistically to prevent them being ordered by retailers in Scotland.”
I also distinctly recall a TV advert along similar lines that was played in Scotland on the night England were eliminated.

And on a related matter: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/5049632.stm

All very good but it is missing the point you made (bolded it to help) where Mars were celebrating english failure or were you just talking rubbish about that? Unless you believe that local advertising supporting the scottish football team automatically means they are celebrating english failure in which case I have no psyduck big enough considering we all know how bad Scotland are at football.

Cro could have gotten a penalty kick 5 minutes before end (Ćorluka judo thrown in front of Spanish goal from corner kick), and it was offside for Spanish goal. Shame. gg

Enjoyed Croatia vs Spain. Not the most exciting football & Spain were pretty average at best. But I enjoyed watching Croatia's defense hold for 85minutes against the best team in the world. Yet another game that left me wondering what the point of the extra officials is, since they do nothing.

Really was hoping for Ireland to win, I know they are already out but really wanted Italy to go with them, plus Ireland at some points really looked like they could have gotten a draw. Italy played well in parts but considering they were playing a below average team (no offence to any Irish) that were already going home they were lucky to get the win.

Personally would like to have seen Spain and Croatia go through.

I think we have a good chance of beating Ukraine tomorrow or at least drawing but then again it is "England" so we could well be going home tomorrow

I'm going by memory. I really can't be arsed to check the transmission times of TV adverts in Scotland in 2006 but I distinctly recall there being a bit of a to-do over them doing something up there in the ad break immediately after England's exit.

But my main point is that Mars are basically a bunch of cynical hypocrites who try to curry flavour with the fans of whatever the local team is to try and sell more of their low-quality chocolate.

I'm fairly certain Mars do not actually give a shit about the English or the Scots beyond them buying their confectionery.

Also advertising is by its very nature cynical. They're selling you a product (or a lifestyle), obviously they're going to pitch it in a way that evokes emotion. I don't really get why anyone who is cognisant of this would really give a shit what wrapper Mars happens to be wrapped in.

Pretty much this, Mars is a massive company that markets its product as best it can, be it supporting England one month or the US the next.

"We should consider England as leaders in the European Championships. They also have problems because if they lose it will be unexpected.
    "

As said by the Ukraine coach, is he thinking of a different Country? As much as I like England we are hardly "leaders" in European football nor will it be unexpected if we lose Probably be more unexpected that we got out of the group stages.

Wales' and Scotland's little man syndrome never fails to amuse me.

Prediction for today. England play terrible, Rooney gets frustrated and ends up with a red and we crash out in spectacular fashion.

Its too likely an unlikely event to come true.
I'm predicting a 3-1 win for England. Or maybe 2-1. They'll concede in some ridiculous manner but they will be too good for Ukraine's defence.

    England 2-1 Ukraine
    France 2-0 Sweden

England will go on to lose to Spain in the quarters.

I wonder how many managers we're going to get through until we realise we're just not that great and that management isn't the problem.

Every time I watch England when they are playing anyone remotely decent it's like being battered by an abusive spouse. You know you should leave them, but you keep coming back hoping they'll change, but nope - they're always going to be that way.

Problem is Ukraine aren't really a decent side yet we are still getting our arses handed to us, unless we start to play better in the second half we are going to concede a goal and Ukraine will rightfully go through, but who knows with England maybe we can pull something off
