After a few restarts for bad start positions I allied with morgan, who happened to be doing very well. It's basically Spartans+Morgan (I'm sparta) against the rest of the world.

I got chaos guns early, and Morgan supplied fusion power, so I absolutely steamrolled the sea ports of University and a Northern expansion of the Peacekeepers. I think I might have to knock it back up to Thinker after this round. I'm going to be busy consolidating my conquests (they were all around the monsoon jungle island, and the AI is terribad so they're extremely high population with little terraforming... I'm shipping in land terraforming for MOAR BOREHOLES now).

I generally don't play with tech stagnation, and I play with conquer = steal tech (which gave me a nice couple from University when I stomped them, but only got spaceflight from UN)
I tried to be cool and all I got was a lousy warning about my sig being too big.

    I just had a thought.

What happens if you wipe out all the Xenofungus on planet, completely? Does it ever grow back? Do mindworms stop spawning? Does the Planetmind "die"?

    Has anyone ever tried this?

iirc planetmind is made up more than that, at least thats how i liked to imagine it. it permeates the entire planet, so just removing the fungus on the surface is like shaving off goliaths body hair.

On the practical side, im pretty sure f.e. the transcendence bloom happens wether theres fungus left or not.

I've think I tried that once (forgive me, it's a decade ago) on a small map. If I remember correctly, Xenofungus will always come back sooner or later, as it is kicked off by your actions (i.e. polution). But don't nail me down on it. As I said, it's (perhaps more than) a dedcade ago.

omg fuck you guys got so much shit I need to get done and instead I have reinstalled this game and playing it over again lol.

So gonna try that Civ upgrade, not sure I could play the game without the videos though.

god damn that game is so awesome I can still play it. If they remade it they would have to capture the exact same dark sinister feeling that the first one had.

Ohh and loved Gaians, go for the long view never used anything but forests and then eventually spammed xenofungus everywhere. eat my mindworms/blink army !.

Another favourite was too raise my own land up as high as possible pollute like a motherfucker and then watch as enemy cities were drowned/starved en masse when sea levels rose. Like playing turn based popolous lol =)

The ability to remotely gather resources was so fucking WIN !!. I would have half the map covered in supply vehicles with actual defensive capabilities feeding my few cities hehe.

I was 12 or so when I played this on a pentium II... I remember being creeped out by the videos.

The nostalgia is strong with this thread, might have to play this again.

You and Lilalaunebör are right. When planet gets angry, fungus along with a few boils of mindworms will explode into a square regardless if there is other fungus nearby. I used to like playing Morgan best and a few boreholes always caused mindworm attacks eventually.

I always used to go University of Planet, given the massive tech advantage I'd rapidly achieve I'd just spam bases and Terraformers. My strategy amounted to:

By endgame it'd be me and a few marginalized factions on the map, and my main opponent would be the planet itself.

Probably will be a remake into a FPS with "bullet-time" or some other novelty schtick.
If you were a superhero you'd be The Incredible Fucktard with your ever-ready sidekick Douchetard Boy. Together, you fight intelligence and common sense where you go.

If they could keep it from devolving into bland, boring shit, i would enjoy mixing some more 'modern' civ game elements into it - variable national/city borders and cleaning up ICS (though fuck culture tbh), strategic resources, national wonders, more involvement with space/orbital production and bombardment, and undersea tunnels (srsly). Also, some more tweaks, fixes, and balance improvements. Most of that could be done via modding if they wouldn't be sued to death and/or had the knowhow

That said, i suspect it would wind up devolving into bland, boring shit, and that would be a damned shame

I don't know what the theorycrafters think, but I found gaians could outtech university at the start of the game. It didn't take too long for the tech bonus to take over, but gaians efficiency bonus kept them ahead for a good while in games I played.

Awesome game. I'm fighting off spartans who are spamming missiles at the moment. Soon my numberless clean 1-1-1 drop scouts will destroy them all.
I'll send in wave after wave of my own men...

the key with university is spam. Their comparatively slow growth rate can be overcome by simply spamming bases all over, and buggies rolling everywhere. Play as aggressively as possible, don't worry about overextending, once your tech advantage kicks in it will kick in hard and you'll be able to easily outproduce and out tech all the other factions.

Well no good game "needs" a remake but they could definitely make AC better. It may be one of my favorite games of all time, but it's not perfect.

I'd like to see them add more depth to negotiations with the AI. Civ 4 did it pretty well, but they could always add more. Of course there are a few minor bugs, graphics to work better on modern systems (actually if they redid it using the civ 4 engine I would probably cream my pants.. I know there's a mod out there but it's not the same), etc etc. Maybe some balancing tweaks (Is it just me or are the believers terrible?). People mentioned some imba special projects. Civ 5 style hexes are nice too...

But of course they'd probably decide to "improve" on the core gameplay somehow and redo everything and make it terrible.

Yeah, i think the version i have has it installed. Between that and the UI fix that someone linked earlier it's really solid and playable on modern systems; which is good, because i remember trying a few years ago with my old CD and it was an endless nightmare.

edit: gameplay question, back in the day, I never really used thermal boreholes because of the ecological effects involved, and didn't really use many echelon mirrors and condensors, either. Noticed the AI using them quite a bit, though...should I be trying as well?

Dude, boreholes are like 6M/6E if I remember right. You can't even use more than 3 of that per square until you research a tech to allow it. They're uber. Who cares about a bit of eco damage? Resources exist to be consumed.

:morgan: . Sounds good, massive drilling operation is go.

also, evidently echelon mirrors stack, condensers give a 50% food bonus, and supply transports don't require support. Christ, i was so bad at this game

Supply Transports were so fucking uber once you got the dual rig mod you could make them Psi resistant too and with high morale basically create a border around your own space that would not only fend off mindworms en masse, but also feed your cities twice what they could gather with direct resources.

I never used echelon mirrors or boreholes much simply because I would have every square filled with supply transports that slowed down enemy advances, prevented planet busters from reaching my cities and deprived mindboils from having spawning points within my regions.
