Mars one, Human settlement of Mars (no joke)

    Video:

    Website:http://mars-one.com/

tldr: someone realized SpaceX has come far enough to send humans to Mars as long as they don't have to come back. Plans to finance it by turning it into a reality show. Think big brother, on another planet, except nobody leaves the house...ever

    you're late mate.

seriously, where are they going to find the funds ? how are they going to make it work ? how are they going to avoid having the crew murder each other ?

the basic problem is and remains H2O tbh.

This is the part that makes me raise an eyebrow. What will happen if the ratings tank and networks stop paying for it? "hey guys its been a good run but its over now, we're cutting supplies, take a cab home"

edit: TERRRRIBLE dutch accents btw :s

yeah, probably not gonna happen. It's very likely technically feasable if they can find enough water. The problem is finding corporations to contribute billions of dollars from now until everyone on mars dies on the hope that what they get out of it is a marketable product, and I doubt that'll ever happen. I mean, we can't even get a TV show about people pretending to be in space renewed, and that costs a hell of a lot less than actually going there

    1. Funds can be provided by national government (see why in point two)

    2. Send convicted Pedo's, serial killers and the CEO's of failed banks

    3. H20 - No H20, No problem

Actually pretty cool, not something I wouldn't personally put myself forward for until I knew I could come home someday, but they will no doubt find a huge amount of candidates that would love to do this. If this is something they can pull off by 2020, I'm sure by 2040-50 technology will be far enough ahead to bring them home anyway.

Inter-planetary travel in my lifetime, fuck yeah!

There is several explanations here, choose depending on your ammount of faith in humanity:

    1) they are hopelessly naive
    2) they are batshit insane
    3) its a scam to try and get some investor money

I agree its doubtful...but nobody ever invented something new, or did something great, by doing something that was possible. They found something deemed impossible, and made it happen.

Space exploration took a big hit in the last few years, but privatization of space exploration with spaceX offers some hope for the future. Well that or the era of space corporations has begun...

I'd actually have no problem with a one way mars trip except for a few things:

    1) screw exercising for 3 hours a day

    2) A few possible undesirable endgame scenarios assuming interest is lost in the colony but we still keep sending the occasional supply boat:
2a) Imagine 60 years into your stay being like 90 and the last guy left alive. That would really suck.
2b) Kids happen. Colony either becomes full of mentally retarded inbreds, horrible mutations (no magnetic field on mars to shield from solar radiation), or everyone has too many kids to be sustainable. Also, assuming all of those issues can be avoided, eventually equipment will break down, wear out, and everyone will die to some terrible disaster.

    This very likely.

And ah poor Firefly. Wife and I really enjoyed that, short though it was. Shame it got canned.

Sent via highly charged bolt of electricity.
