Furthermore, where any particular individual's ideal designs fall in that range is pretty subjective. So arguing over it is, for the most part, pointless wankery.
    Agreed.

The new Raven (and the Bombers too) are what I'd hold up as the example as quality redesign.

The new Scorpion, rightfully so, an example of improvement that did not work out as well, because they went too far and too generic/anthropomorphic.

But for things like overall-hull symmetry, thats going to always be personal. I like the new Scorp not because it's a "lolScorp-looking-Scorp", but because I prefer overal general symmetry. Statisticly speaking, so does the majority, which is why symmetry often gets = to generic.

Also, agreed on the pointless wankery, with myself guilty as anyone. You're quite right Tarm.

my opinion only, so feel free to disagree: ships don't need to be symmetrical, but they do need to look fairly balanced.

Asymmetry done well: Coercer, Naga, Cormorant, Omen
    and badly: Moa, Aeon
Well said Gly. Visually Balanced > Absolute Symmetry.

My general opinion. I don't want ships to have complete symmetry, but there has some be some kind of purpose to the asymmetry. When it's done well it can make ships look visually interesting and well-engineered, when it's done poorly it makes ships ugly and flimsy-looking. Every time I see an Aeon in warp it feel like the big side part is going to snap off and float away.

The raven is very asymmetrical, something you've been railing against in your posting here.

They did a good job with that one. I didn't like most of the other things I've seen them proposing, such as the rookie ships. I should probably look at more examples of their v3 work, but not the kind of thing you've been championing here. The scorpion is simply the best example of that. They should have done with it what they did with the raven. T'was an excellent ship, just a little old in the polygons.

Aye, well as the discussions gone on I've tried to whittle down to greater specificity. For example, "Balanced" is a better word for my own preference. The Raven, although asymmetrical, is visually balanced and fixed most of the bad things (IMO) of the old design (like the massive cockpit graphic, for example). The old Scorpion was horribly unbalanced, the new Scorpion too much Scorpion (but balanced).

I should mention while I'm a fan of shopping off the great big dumbo ears off the Vaga, thats a very ship-specific opinion. I am not in favor of removing all the various little bits, bobs and details of ships that make them differentiated vs. their T1 counterparts. In fact, I like the direction of the Bombers, where the T2 is quite different, but only based on, the T1 hull it's decended from. I hope that idea gets some traction within CCP.

We probably agree more than we disagree Frug, tbqh. No worries.

Tech 2 hulls should look like an improvement on the ship's framework. In favor of the stuff like that Alistair.

Sorry Alistair, but Scorpion is zoomorphic, not anthropomorphic, thus your argument is invalid.

So the new hull Alistair would want should be shaped like Megamaid?

edit: consider the Dust 514 possibilities!
doubleedit: Damage bonus to Druish hulls. Or targets their resist hole.

The Moa was the ship I fell in love with that brought me to Eve. Just because it was so mutated and fucked-up looking.

Still one of my favourite ships :3

Arguing over art and design is futile, I want someone to leak the completely new ships CCP has been working on so we can complain about those.
I'm still under NDA, you can share with me I promise I won't say anything.

People in this thread are talking a lot about ships looking different, which is a bit odd to me as they still seem to be the same variously sized white boxes they've always been.
I tried to be cool and all I got was a lousy warning about my sig being too big.
