First time assembling new pc and hopefully it's a good one

    So.

I've been looking to upgrade my old rig for a while now but always wanted to think it over properly and see what is available (to prevent "lordservant scenario's" (though lulzworthy)) but against my better judgement I got caught in the moment and just bought one.

    Asus P8Z77 mobo
    i5 2500 3.3 GHz
    4x 4GB ram
    Sapphire HD 7950
    650W power supply
and misc. stuff like windows 7, 120gb SSD
Total cost just over 1000 euros

    I hope it is a non-terrible purchase
Anyway I've decided to try and assemble it myself. Never done anything of the sort so protips are welcome. The dude at the hardware shop already said to be especially careful with attaching the processor, since the warranty will be void if the pins get bent. Anything else I really need to know?

    Look, ma! No pins!

At least the mobo's probably worth less than the CPU if you did bend one.

    "Asus P8Z77" is that -V Deluxe/Pro/???

    Just checking, "i5 2500" non-k?

    4313 million GPU transistors

Brand of PSU? Kinda key component...
Same goes for SSD, and RAM to a lesser extent.

you really want to go out and get another 4gb of memory at least, maybe 12.
    oh and dont' wear nylon.

But in general take your time, don't force anything where it doesn't want to go, and if you get lost, use google.

Apparently I am a faggot and it is non-k

    Also it is P8Z77-M
    PSU is Coolermaster
    SSD is Ocz Agility3
RAM is Kingston?? never heard of it before.

Everything is still in the box so if it is a major issue that it is non -k I can return it? TBH I am a total nab so I just went with what the guy advised me. I am trying to keep it close to 1k though, already straining the budget quite a bit.

Which country is this? Price looks steep for what you're getting.

There is only 4 RAM slots and they were out of 8GB ones. I asked about it and the dude said 16 gb would suffice for now and I an always put bigger ones on there when the need arises. For reference they were like 25 eu

He must have misread your post, 16gb is fine.

The k version is only like $20 more, so if you can quickly exchange it go for it.

For reference Kingston is one of the biggest names in RAM :P

I think he failed to realise that you had purchased a total of 16 GB, which is realistically way more than you'll use for the forseeable future. Kingston is a fine brand, they've been around for ages and I've not had trouble with them.

If the people in the store actually told you that the pins on the CPU could bend they're fucking idiots though. They didn't steer you -too- wrong, an i5 K would have been better esp. for overclocking, but it doesn't sound like you'll be very concerned with that. Just keep in mind that generally there's only one way the cables fit on the board, and the manual for the motherboard will show you where everything goes. Do take your time, make sure you're grounded and not wearing something stupid like a plush fleece sweater, and you'll be fine. The best way to learn is by doing.

Guess that Sapphire HD7950 is pretty expensive, so price makes sense I guess. Would go for the K though and 2x8GB, because then you can actually add something, else you'll end up throwing stuff away.

There is some wisdom here, I'm looking at my 4x1 and thinking if I buy 2x2 I only gain 2, or 2x4, only 6 more.

    it's fundementally really really easy.

    1) follow the guide that comes with your mobo - lots of pictures and straightforward stuff
    2) earth yourself all the time, do the build on something non-static inducing (carpet is a no-no)
    3) it's basically lego but electronic and rather more expensive (or not judging how expensive lego is now >:[ )
    4) take your time! silly little things like not plugging in the case switches in the right place on the mobo can give you a heart-attack when you first try and boot
    5) keep the cables neat as you assemble it all - this makes swapping stuff easier, it makes air-flow better and it makes the whole thing look a lot prettier

Building your first computer is a lot like losing your virginity with a girl. It's something you've been looking forward to for years. You've got an idea of what to do, but you're not exactly sure how to do it. The packaging often contains something unexpected inside. You'll fumble around for a while, trying to make things fit right. If it doesn't belong there and you try to apply power, you'll get scary noises. After a while you'll figure it out, and when you're finally done, you'll have a very smug look on your face.

Lol @ virginity reference. Sounds quite like what I'm going through.

I've started assembling but already running into some issues. PSU, mobo/processor, gfx and SDD are in place and I'm working on connecting the cables to everything, but it takes much longer than I anticipated. To be fair I've had to remove some components again a few times when I found out it was the wrong way around etc.

Also the closest thing I've gotten to assembling a pc before actually involves redstone so I guess I just need some practice pics incoming later

    Halp

24pin power connector on the motherboard fits but the 8pin connector does not connect to the psu ... Dont know how to explain but the holes can either be square or partly diamond shape and the psu plug does not have the same pattern.
It is the EATX 12V connector that doesnt fit.

Wat do? Should I return the PSU?

are you sure that you're trying with the right cable, ie the eatx you mentioned, not the pci-e one?

i checked both 650W psus CM has in offer, and both of them have the right eatx cable shown on photos, so I guess you should have one too
