It does. Two times Epistrophy:<location> job completed, followed by my failed one, Epistrophy: Coastview, job failed. And followed by another one simply reading Epistrophy, job failed.

So yes, one can fail that quest line.
[...] maybe I've never struggled with it because I always show up to that one proper-or-overly leveled.
That very well is it, I think. I restarted after on my first run I made it past the epilogue and unlocked all of NC. And after going around a bit and having done the first 1 or 2 missions of this, I started from scratch now that I had a bit better idea of the gameplay and what to spec into. And went to do the Delamain storyline as one of the first ones, because I found it fun and easy ... if I only had attempted the 3rd mission on my first attempt, I might have questioned the "easy" part of that ... :-)

Second playthrough done, took the Reaper ending. There were a few spots where I thought it got a little dicey (clearing the lobby took longer than I planned), but I didn't run into any serious risk until the fight with Adam Smasher, when he knocked me down to 15 health. Fenrir for enemies at range, monowire for everything close. Widow Maker made short work of enemies behind cover. Gave Judy a kiss and sailed off into the void.

Since I've done everything I wanted to, I think I can leave Night City behind for good now.

I have an incredible backlog of Steam games, including two Pathfinder games, to go through. I need to stop doing additional playthroughs of old, familiar games as a way to avoid doing new things.

Phantom Liberty will be the only/last DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, CDPR said.

The reason is that CDPR will drop their own REDengine in favor of Epic's Unreal engine for future development.

Re-installed and started a playthrough with v2.0 as the expansion needs a relatively high level character - apparently.
The game feels absolutely amazing now. The city was always stunning, but the whole thing feels cleaner and leaner, while having a million things to do.
    It's so good!

And yet the brilliant characters and the great story doesn't feel the same anymore after playing BG3

Not sure that's the case - having played the crap out of BG3 there is so much depth to the world of Night City.
Now, if you want to compare it to say Starfield - lets fuckin' go.

Yeah I would put this easily in the same ballpark as BG3, with some areas its actually better (I'm a bit bored of "pick 3 companions out of a stable of 6-8 to ensure you have a tool for every puzzle" mechanics, feels a bit uninspired and overtly punishing of hyper-specialisation)

somehow I don't have even the slightest urge to try out the new patch, the game left so sour taste before, and looking at some streams it seems that the game balance hasn't really been improved, nor the city just being cardboard and not reacting to anything.

I decided to play the new DLC first and then buy BG3. Seems like a solid plan.

I noticed at least one way that balance had been radically improved, actually. Prior to 2.0 any netrunner build with a Rippler cyberdeck literally removed combat as a game mechanic, you could short circuit every mob in a quest area without even being seen. Now if you want to do that you have to use the new OC mode which drains health, and you're more likely to be discovered and shot at, so it felt a lot riskier and required more actual effort to even clean out a corner with a couple street thugs.

NPC models still get reused disappointingly often, and one of them very rudely interrupted a fine convo I was having with one of the joytoys in Dark Matter by just walking in between us and pushing me away, so sure there are still some visible seams. But the reworked vehicles and new radio stations make up for it in my mind.

Starting fresh, Hella (starting car) is actually controllable now. Can't say if the game's improved because i loved it as is sans early bulletsponge bollocks but carnage shotgun seems to sort it.
