FAO's mandate
Achieving food security for all is at the heart of FAO's efforts - to make sure people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives.

FAO's mandate is to raise levels of nutrition, improve agricultural productivity, better the lives of rural populations and contribute to the growth of the world economy.


So my questing is: The FAO has a budget of about 1 billion USD, yet world hunger is rampant.

What will it take for us to finally end world hunger? Technological achievments? Social reforms? MO MONEY? A UN that doesn't suck?

I'm pretty sure I remember (if I'm wrong, someone feel free to correct me with some stats) that the world already produces more food than every person on earth could possibly need. The major problem is most of this food is produced by only a few locations.. and so it is logistically challenging (corruption, infrastructure, etc) to get the food to where it needs to be to feed the people.

One of the big problems with all of this is that a lot of poeple dont realize that in the areas with insufficient food production, we ship massive amounts of food aid to these locations trying to help out. When in reality this tends to worsen the problem because it undercuts the local agriculture which cannot compete with the low priced food aid, eventually leading to the collapse of said local agriculture & increased dependence on foreign aid and exacerbating the problem. And if that foreign aid gets cut they are really fucked. It really is a catch 22, on the one hand we dont want people to have to needlessly starve to death; and on the other we dont want to collapse their agricultural industries so that they can be eventually become self sufficient.

Really tho, if your living somewhere you cant grow plants, its probably a bad idea to live there.

Okay, so the FAO has a budget of 1b USD. Let's say that 1/7 of the world's population is starving and without clean water. Insert maths, and you suddenly realize that 1b can't purchase enough food, not to mention distribute it.

It could help a region build sustainable farmland with greater output, but that would require more freshwater, and many places have limited access to that.
