I Love Lucy did it in the 50's, radio shows and some single camera shows before that. I quite enjoy Big Bang Theory, but then I generally don't watch much TV so I guess I'm not tired of the whole "laugh track" thing.
It is a live audience and they don't force people to laugh. I know this first hand, even on this specific show. The show is hardly meant to draw an audience that you people belong to.
