    Not casual, not pay2win, waht do?

    tldr;

    In approaching free-to-play marketing strategies for games, developers (particularly in non-mobile/non-social markets) can lower retention costs and develop longer-lived user experiences by avoiding the “low hanging fruit”, and the misconception of volume and conversion as independent levers.

    tddr?

    'traditionally', free2play games are dumbed down to appeal to as many people as possible.

    ten times more people = ten times more income (in theory).

    In addition, free2play games have pay2win, because it's the easist way to get players to pony up money.

    What this article is saying is that if a game developer does this, they get a lot of income but they churn through their customers, which are a finite resource unless you are facebook.

    Instead, focusing on player retention like Tribes (and Team Fortress 2, but possibly by accident) allows non-whale players to get invested in the game enough to go 'yeah I got my money's worth, I'll chip in for some guns or something' without everyone getting sick of being pwned by whales then quitting.

    This appears to be the same model that DUST is following:

    step 1: get players
    step 2: keep players
    step 3: profit
