And yeah, at max level there are very few rares on the AH, let alone good rares. It's mostly blues that people have been scraping out of the first couple of quests of Act1 Inferno.
I do quite a few Act3 Hell runs and rarely get anything worth selling, let alone something I can use directly. I've got 3M gold but there's no good gear to buy that'd make me comfortable about going into Inferno yet. So I even burn vast quantities of blacksmithing tomes (price has gone down since I capitalized on them, but theyre still at 3k-4k a piece) to try and fill the gaps but no luck there.
Propertly good 55+ items are being listed as 2M+ buyouts. I can really see a D2-esque bartaring ecomomy emerging for HC if this continues, as right now gold only gets you so far. Trading awesome rares might be the best way (esp with the 15% AH tax).
It's Diablo man!
What I mean is that at lvl 60 I've found a dozen or so bows that are as good as what I bought up to maybe lvl 50 or so, like a 300 DPS xbow for lvl 51 with a socket, that's decent. I have no chance of finding anything even remotely as good as that when I'm actually lvl 50. In D2 the items and their affixes matches the lvl you were supposed to be in that zone. Sure you'd find much better gear in later acts / difficulties, but that gear wasn't useable by lower lvl characters.
I actually like that, although the AH does maybe cause a problem. I like that the level restrictions are lower than the level of the mob that drops the item. It basically lets you twink alts a lot easier, which IMO is a much more enjoyable way of playing the same game through multiple times (let me do crazy builds that would not be viable with normal balanced-for-the-level gear). Yeah, the problem with the AH is that if the prices go low enough, it might be possible to be able to twink your main out with the gold you've got just playing the game. In HC though, at least, if you do that (spend all your money on making your main badass) then you're back to square one if you die. So thats ok with me.
Also pretty sure that the D2 restrictions were pretty lax as well, although could be wrong. I think there was a lot more variation in the lvl reqs of items that dropped in a given act/difficulty, as well as str/dex requirements on a lot of items. I still remember being able to make alts pretty imba with gear they would never get at that level though, but with not having an AH it was harder to do it (not really worth keeping every slightly-better-than-average item you find in your stash).

God damn it, lost my 35 nightmare monk in cave of the moon clan. Knew I shouldnt of gone in there...
Killed butcher with my level 15 DH, was very scared for most of the fight. I was hammering smokescreen and vault whenever they came off cooldown, guessing this is what boss fights are like for DHs.
Made 50 yesterday. Still only on Act 3 of NM. Is it possible to level to 60 before leaving Act 1 of Hell, because I have a horrible, sneaking suspicion that Hell will probably be the death of me...
Cheesing it up with the chest run in early act1 inferno. Those fat zombies are do a scary fuckton of damage, but at least im getting a slow trickle of tomes of secrets, and some p decent level60 gear. Think it's probably more effective than doing Hell farming, although about a thousand times more tedious. But also safer.
What sucks is that all the half decent players I met on the way up have died off so there's nobody to play with in inferno ;_;

It is much, much much slower though. Honestly if you have decent-ish gear you're better off farming Act1 Hell. I went from 51-56 or so in Act1, then 56-60 in Act2. Both had their scary moments though, but nothing you can't manage/avoid if you're alert enough. It's just about knowing what elite affix combos are nasty on what mobs and in what situations. Also recmmend playing Hell with others, even pubs. Even if you're with scrubs, extra bodies to spread out the attention of nasty elites are always welcome.
If you go into Act 2 though, just be really really careful of elite wasps with frozen + anything. Saw a lot of pubbies die to them (freeze then eating a volley of flies). Again just play it safe, if you don't have your CC escape off cooldown then don't be in the middle of the fight where you're likely to get frozen.
Fucking elite wasps man....just killers. Just lost my DH to some. After a narrow escape with Jailer ones on my wi\rd, Daemon Hunter got frzoen on a stagger very close together. Popped smoke first time, dodged flies, frozen again, flies to face.
FFFFUUUU
Lvl30 hardcore wizard, solo, haven't lost one, yet.
After some really close calls with Vortex + stuns in both act 1 and act 2, I am going really slow through act 3, stacking hp like no tomorrow. I probably have enough gear to finish normal, but wouldn't feel confident enough to go to nightmare until lvl36-38, anyway.
At this rate, it would be a while until I reach Hell, much less inferno.
For anyone getting into HC, there is a good compilation of HC advice on the Diablo forums:

Its even worse when people say it out loud to you.
Just finished NM Act 3 at lvl 51; I have 26k hp, 2.2k armor, 100 resists, but only 1.3k dps as a wizard and feel very under-geared (esp. DPS wise). I have a lvl 45 rare wand and 44 rare offhand source with pretty decent stats (+ lots of int, vit, life on hit) - what am I doing wrong?
Can some people who made it to Hell post their stats as they started Act 1?
The problem is your mainhand weapon is 6 levels behind. I know its harder to get gear on HC but that would be the first thing on my list to solve. Is there anything at all on the AH at those levels? Even a mediocre level 51 blue would probably double your dps.
Started new HC characters with a friend yesterday. I went monk, he went WD. We beat act 1 without any trouble. Breath of heaven + blind kept me safe along with move speed, attack speed, and damage debuffs. Found some awesome gear for dirt cheap on the AH, too bad it was broken and I couldn't buy anything. Hopefully that's fixed.

I've been taking it a little slow what with uni and all. I've got a Wizard at the start of act 3 normal and a Witch Doctor at the start of act 2.
I haven't had a ton of trouble yet apart from when I was finding my feet with the Doctor trying to settle on skills. Settled on using the single bat as it's the closest to Bone Spear (though Bone Spear at least went in a straight line) and a bunch of control on all my keys. After the first bunch of levels of feeling awful and thinking about ditching the character altogether it's finally started feeling a bit more like what I liked about the Necromancer in D2 and I think it'll pay off in the end (I ran straight bone spells, dipping into curses for Dim Vision and Decrepify).
The big difference is not being able to quaff mana potions like my shitty car goes through oil.
