There's no way they can have a new engine ready, which means there's no way this change is going to give us anything significant like less hacking, larger servers, or server-hopping fixes. It's just about money.

If they make it a standalone they can switch the engine from "Trust every client" to "Trust no Client" in terms of server security and thus far preventing all the scripts, wich will make a huge difference.
But i dont think it will be developed with the arma 2 engine, but rather with the arma 3 one. A community alpha is sceduled for this fall anyways and DayZ is the perfect tool for BI to test it within a 2nd instance.
Sure it is to some extend about the money, but i'd rather pay for something out of the box like dayz then for call of duty 1233451. Especialy if you only have to pay 15€ like it was with minecraft.
I didn't say that you were wrong, it's just a horrible post that reeks of butthuerte and pessimism.
EDIT: Actually, you probably are wrong.
Rocket's already said he has dayz running on the ARMA3 engine, which is already at several gamescons in a playable state so logic dictates if he's going to make a standalone game he'll probably use a new engine rather than selling something he's already giving away for free?

Could it not be sold as an expansion to arma3?

He's posting right now on reddit, shame he's not replying to the engine questions for the standalone but he'll be doing a Q+A soonTM.
By new engine I actually meant something besides/beyond stock ArmA3. You don't build an MMO on a shooter engine for a reason. Imagine a WoW server that could only hold 75 players and had lines in the code allowing for them to spawn any item into their inventory (even if those lines of code are not easily accessed). The only reason for DayZ to be a standalone game is so that it can modify the engine, so I look forward to seeing how that capability will be used before the standalone version is launched.
There, now my post contains the same content but with a positive tone.

Tried it for the frist time, not totally sold yet though. Found a AS50 rifle wich looks pretty neat, but only having 5bullets sucks. Had a pretty uneventfull first day!
5 bullets is *plenty* for an AS-50.
You'll see what I mean when you start shooting at stuff.
