I suppose you could be REALLY meta-gamey/cheaty and use a personal server (I see a few in the list) to farm loot and then shoot up strangers on regular servers

kicking people to make room for server owners / friends & locking the server so no one can join gets your server permanently banned from DayZ by Rocket if you get reported doing it lots.

its actually possible for servers to not show up on the server list. A single line in the server.cfg file can be removed to make the server invisible and people can then use direct connect to get in :P

Yeah unfortunately there are some seriously gay settings on the PL servers. Otherwise it would be fun.

List of good servers (not even 3rd person allowed) that I know of:
Chicago 1
Chicago 5
Chicago 20
SLC 1 (is usually on UTC -10 which means it stays daylight for entire US primetime)
US Hardcore 1,2,3 (but these aren't very stable)

Would be great if people can add to this list, especially some non-US ones.

Only change I'd make there is Crosshairs off. There has to be a disadvantage to using the ultimate win DMR.

"peeps on comms vs everyone else" tends to be the model.

and even being on comms doesnt help sometimes

nope. pretty much none since Entrox's DayZ server died a slow and terrible death

Been playing on KH7 (Kelly's Heroes). Full hardcore everything off settings. Pretty fun. Picked up a ... er <political correct mode> baggage handler who woouldn't leave me alone, so after spending 10 minutes trying to tempt zombies to eat him, I realised they clearly prefer...well let's say chicken to beef. So I did the decent thing and sold him to the next group I came across for a tin of baked beans.

The way crosshairs work, you can use them to pull up nametags (but not as obviously as the actual nametags), and also magically give you the range to objects. Crosshairs off please. 3rd person is the only setting that's even debatable.

Waypoints are also easy mode tbh. I only learned about them yesterday and never had a problem before even without compass/clock.

Cross hairs don't give any info other than where your gun is pointed, you get the additional info when combined with name tags and map visibility. To be honest cross hairs are pretty important to me for any thing other than side arm at close range, would quite happily live with out 3rd person but not with out crosshairs.
